Also, I tried it a kohls reader wasn't picking up anything...

You'll know when a reader is enabled as it won't let you swipe the card through anymore. It'll just tell you to insert the card or "USE ICC or CHIP" after a swipe.

Visited Walmart yesterday to buy some ammunition. Used Chip + Signature for the first time. It went flawless and I didn't have to sign anything so that was great.

That message only shows up if you let the cashier swipe your card on their register, not the terminal facing you.

Some registers at my local Walmart store needs to do that in order to accept EMV card. SImply swipe your card or insert it into the terminal doesn't work. You have to ask the cashier to swip your card at the register first, then you can insert the card into the terminal.

On the other hand other registers at my local Walmart store has EMV slot enabled. You can just insert it right away. It is really weird, same store, but different approach at different registers.

Just used my chip enabled BofA Cash Rewards Visa Signature at Wal Mart. It was kind of exciting. The terminal looked just like the one in the pictures in this thread. I first swiped the card and the associate knew to have me insert the card instead. It took a little longer to approve than with swiping but it was kind of cool; the people behind me in line were very interesting in what was going on.

Yes, I know this is in the AMEX thread but I thought I would share here instead of starting a new thread in the Visa/MasterCard section.

The cashier has to approve the transaction which takes longer because they are not used to doing this. It does take longer because of this and you also have to approve it again and select a language. I do hope it'll be simpler process in the future, I am glad I didn't have to sign anything.

Here's a picture of an EMV transaction at a Walmart in Virginia (Posted by Weave on flyer talk)

I see what you meant two days ago I went to walmart and I kept getting an error when I was swiping my card. The store manager was actually taking with the cashier guy before I got there. I was getting helped while both talked- I kept getting an error and then the manager was like "oh you have an american express card you need to use that chip now its a new thing" i`m "like okay" hahah

months ago I wasn't required to use the the EMV- back then the EMV reader didn't work

Walmart has now enabled over 2000 stores (1000 more than a couple of weeks ago), It won't be long before they are all enabled.

I have a citi diamond preferred that comes with an EMV chip and I was blown away the first time I used it. I remember that there were two shoppers behind me who literally looked over my back to see how the card works when it was inserted into the slot..
