Is this a way for me to get the AMEX Platinum with a signup bonus?

Postby VisaSpeak » Mon Apr 14, 2014 9:08 am

I currently have a Gold PRG (25,000 signup bonus) which I got June '13. Ive got good history with Amex and have put over $10,000 on the card throughout the year.

My credit score is around 720-730 or so.. so here is my plan:

Apply for the Mercedes Amex Platinum. Get that 50,000 signup bonus. Then downgrade the MB Platinum card to a regular Platinum card. Cancel my Gold PRG. Then just keep Platinum.

Would Amex let this happen?

Sounds fine but why not just keep the MB Platinum? It's essentially the same card and only costs $25 more a year.

I think that's kind of the reason right there.

I called and asked if I would qualify. At the time, I had upgraded my gold to PRG. 5 months later, I saw the offer for MB platinum. Called and asked if I could upgrade and get the points, the rep said no but if I applied for it separately I would get the points. Applied, was accepted, got the points and cancelled my PRG the next month. Product change to regular platinum the month after. I own a Mercedes, so the welcome gift from benz was nice (gift card for $100 worth of benz stuff), but I don't plan on buying one anytime soon.

I see awesome, I may do that later in the future but the regular Platinum card not the Mercedes one(not a fan)

Should I do all of this before my 1 year hits with the Gold Prg? To avoid paying the $175 fee
