As far as I know if the account is less than 13 months old then you cannot upgrade the PRG. Even if you pay the annual fee they will prorate the Platinum annual fee so you wouldn't be paying anything extra.

If I upgrade the PRG, would the bonus be 50,000 MR points?

Or is it best to just do the

Get MB Plat --> Downgrade to Regular ---> cancel Gold?

Regular Plat bonus is only 40,000 points so I may as well just apply for the MB card

I am in similar situation. I have AMEX PRG (Nov. 2013 25K MR Bonus). I want to get the Platinum card. If I apply for the MB platinum, can I use the annual gift certificate for my current lease with MB or it has to be a new purchase?
My second question is - if I apply for the regular AMEX platinum, will I get the bonus 40K MR points prior to 13 months of AMEX PRG card?

Thanks for reading!

Are you sure you can actually downgrade the MB Platinum to the normal one? I inquired about downgrading my Ameriprise Platinum to a normal one and was told it's not possible, that I'd have to cancel the Ameriprise and reapply for the normal one.

By the way, anyone with high yearly spending should sign up for the Ameriprise Platinum. I don't keep close watch of my points so I wasn't aware of this until I called about downgrading but the rep informed me that if you spend $20K a year or more on the card you get 5000 bonus points. I had received these points and didn't even realize it. The yearly fee is the same as the normal Platinum and it doesn't have a big Ameriprise logo on the front on anything. Just a small logo on the bottom right corner on the back.
