It's just the game you have to play. I work in customer service. There are established procedures that you need to follow, and I can promise you that Amex has no procedure that even mentions the word "backdate". Rather, I would bet there's an article titled something like "SOP: A new card of a previous Cardmember doesn't reflect the original Member Since date".
Sure, there are going to be reps who know what "backdating" is, but I would bet that it doesn't actually make a substantial portion of their call volume, so it's best to use terminology that they can look up in their system in case they don't know what to do off the top of their head.
