When to apply again?

Postby Manutdfan » Fri Mar 28, 2014 1:24 am

I fly with Delta multiple times a year domestically and internationally so the Delta Amex would be great for me

I first applied in February of 2013 - declined.

I applied again in February of 2014 - declined for three reasons
High utilization
Too many inqueries
Low credit score

So I paid off all my cards and now my scores are hovering around 700, utlilization is around 8% but I have 11 Iinqueries only 3 of which are in from the last year.

Would it be a good time to apply again around April 20th. I received an offer from them in the mail with an offer for 45,000 bonus miles and 15,000 mqms... But it's for this platinum not gold. It's a great offer but considering I was declined recently should I just stick to trying for the gold? Please let me know.

dang, i would suggest waiting another year- that way those inquiries can be dropped- they are dropped after 2 years.... so you have another year to go.

but the only way to find out is going for it since your score is up now.

when was your last inquiry? wait 3 months after that, and give it a shot. if you get denied again, wait another 3.

I would say go for it in April. 2 of the 3 will be addressed then leaving only inquiries, and you said you have 3 in the last year which is not really a lot (I got approved for Amex Everyday with more than that).

Will it matter if I'm applying for the Gold again or the Platinum? Since I've already been declined for the Gold will that be taken into consideration for an application for Platinum? Thanks for all of your knowledge!!!

Platinum is on top of gold so be denied faster. I would recommed you to wait until next year or until inquires remove
Amex Gold:
Amex Jetblue 6k
Chase Sapphire Preferred 5k
Discover 3k
Capital One Venture 3k
Capital One Quiksilver 2k
Capital One MTV 500

Everything I've read suggests the criteria for Platinum is the same as the criteria for Gold - if you could get Gold you should also be able to get Platinum.

To say that a person would get declined "faster" for Platinum than Gold, seriously, please show us your data points for this, I have a feeling I know the source, but I'd need rubber gloves and a flashlight to check.

I've seen the same information. If your credit is good enough for the Green card, it should be good enough for Platinum. I believe that they may consider income more heavily for the higher-tier charge cards, but from everything I've seen, the credit requirements are identical across the board.

Also, I think Amex wants 90 days between applications, so wait at least that long after your last Amex application.

More than a few responses at a variety of credit card forums backs up what Member is saying. Anecdotally, the underwriting is the same across all of the charge cards. If you qualify for a Plat you'll qualify for a Green and vice versa. The exception of course is the Centurion!
