Chance for Approval for Amex Green and/or Delta Skymiles Gold

Postby HotrodBill » Wed Feb 26, 2014 12:53 am

as a long time lurker I finally joined and wanted everyone's thoughts on my chances for approval for the amex green card and or gold delta sky miles card.

current length of accounts is 2 years give or take

current cards:
Cap one plat $1000 limit, $137 balance opened 2/24/12
cap one (formally orchard bank) $400 limit balance 0 opened 4/13/2012
cap one secured 200 limit balance 0 opened 6/26/11
first premier limit 300, balance 0 (when it posts, just PIF) opened 10/02/10
first premier limit 400, balance 0 (when it posts, just PIF) opened 4/6/12
JC Penny limit 400, balance 0 opened 04/02/14

I have around 12K in student loans which are in deferred payment status, and am currently in school full time, as well as working full time.

I made roughly 32K last year i believe off the top of my head, and I'll be at my job a year come march/april and am projected to make 40-45K this year. (grossed 9k between jan/feb, netted 6k and change)

I have never missed a payment, on any of my cards, and up until recently, although i had high balances, usually would make at least the minimum payment, if not pay a little more, but always 100% on time, usually early.

my current FICO score is 644,eqifax. before 3 of my accounts post to zero balances and raise my score.

What are my chances of being approved? I dont want to waste a inquiry, if I am going to be denied. Should i get rid of my first premier cards? i hate them, and everything about them, but they helped me build a history when i was new to credit. should i let all my cards sit at a zero balance for a while and "garden" and then try? i'd really like a charge card for my monthly expenses without damaging my utilization on my 1k cap one card which is a quicksilver card.

thanks in advance, I love this forum Bill.

Seat of the pants application handicapping here:

Green, maybe.

Delta, probably not.

Go for the Green and see what happens with it. You might even try for PRG. Let us know how it goes.

This biggest negatives I see are a credit history <5 years and a low income for Amex, and you have opened another non Amex card in the last 6 months. But I've been surprised before by them.

I would also suggest apping for the Discover IT Student card too at the same time. It's a great card, and if you App at the same time they shouldn't see the inquiries from the other as it takes a little bit of time for them to post.

I had thought of the discover it card, but my understanding is that you have to be at a 4 year university. I am currently at a community college and plan on transferring to the u of m in about a year once I have knocked out all of my general education requirements. Is that still true?

I hadn't heard that personally.

I think I am going to wait till April and see what happens with my score, I thought a few changes would have been noted to my credit profile, and it seems to be a little slower then I had thought. My birthday is on April 1st, so I'll let time run its course until then, and maybe apply for the green card then, and see what happens, and report my results back here.

I would ditch the first premier cards... aside from the fact that you've paid an arm/leg in fees, there are some who say an open PF account is looked at negatively by amex.
In my Wallet:
  • Amex PRG NPSL[3-14, bd 91]
  • Sallie Mae MC $8000[1-14]
  • Chase Freedom $4700[1-14]
  • Discover It $2750[8-13]
  • BoA UCF Alumni Cash Rewards $5000 [3-15]
Sometimes in my Wallet:
  • GM BuyPower WEMC $5000[9-14]
  • Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex $7000[4-14]
  • Barclaycard Arrival WEMC $7000[3-14]
  • BoA Better Balance $3000[2-15]
In my sockdrawer: Amex BCE $1000[10-13, bd 91], OCCU Duck $10000 [11-13], The Sportsman's Guide Visa $8000[8-14], Chase Slate $4000 [9-14]Delta Gold Amex $2000 [2-15 bd 91], Diners Club MC $20000 [10-14] Commerce Bank Visa $2000 [3-15] Citi Double Cash $1000 [3-15]
Total CL: $90450

I would agree with your latest thinking - wait until April and see how the low utilization affects your score. I doubt you'd get approved for the Delta card with a 644 score, the green maybe, but probably a manual review. In the latter case, the First Premier cards might be a detriment.
AmEx - Platinum (NPSL) , Blue Cash Preferred ($19,000), Gold Delta Skymiles ($8,500)
Chase - Sapphire Preferred ($14,000), Disney ($11,500), Amazon.com ($9,000), Freedom ($8,000)
CapOne - QuickSilver ($7,250) / Platinum Rewards ($7,250)
