Applying for 2nd Amex?

Postby jitdc » Thu Feb 13, 2014 7:43 pm

Hello, I'm new to this forum, discovered it after looking for a better resource than myfico and I have been very impressed with the content here! Love what I have learned so far thank you to all!

I applied for my first Amex, the Platinum card on 1/6/14.I was approved, have been using the card for about a month now and absolutely love it. Looking at my Equifax it only shows an inquiry from Amex on the day I applied but the Amex account doesn't seem to have posted to my report yet. My score didn't take a hit at all, at least not yet, in fact my score has gone up by one point since the date I applied.

Last week my business signed up for a Costco membership, I'm a physician and co-own a practice. When we signed up for the membership we were offered a True Earnings Card. Applied, 25K instant approval. I believe this card only shows me as an AU though since it was run through the business and no inquiry has shown on my personal credit report.

So now I've started looking at adding a personal AMEX credit card in addition to my charge and business TE. I'm just not sure how long I should wait to apply? Credit score is not as good as others, 682 Equifax, 715 TU FICO but I have a very solid W2. I have been so happy with AMEX this past month and I want to continue to build a good relationship with them not just looking to grab credit. Perhaps I'm real lying looking at another AMEX (BCE or BCP) because I've been so happy about joining the family that I keep drooling over their other cards. (And the approval is kind of addicting) Any advice or input would be much appreciated!

I know just how you feel. I dearly wish they had cash back on the Gold the same as they have on the Blue Cash as I would rather give them all my business on a single charge card. I really appreciate Amex customer service; they go above and beyond when you get the right people.

I can't speak to how long you should wait but I get the feeling a few months at least would be beneficial, especially with your scores. The Blue cards make the most sense, when you consider that you can get gift cards through the grocery stores that get better cash back on places that the Blue doesn't include at the higher percentage.

Others with more experience will give you a better idea of timing, but I think anyone with an Amex charge card will benefit from one of the Blue cards as well.
Gold American Express, since 1979,
back when it meant something.
And a few other cash back cards as well.

Judging by your occupation and your current CL on the Platinum, I'd say pull the trigger and apply if you really want the CC. I've seen others with similar credit scores get approved for the BCE and Blue Sky.

Thank you both for your responses. If/when I app for the BCE can I upgrade that to the BCP after 6 months? I went back and read about the Gold Delta Skymiles card as well, offers seem kind of inciting. I think before I apply for any more cards I need to create a solid strategy of use for these cards. Maximizing rewards and cash back is pretty new to me. My only cards prior were from Commerce Bank (back when I was in undergrad), WellsFargo Platinum (both are kind of joke cards) and a Wal-Mart store card. To be honest I was surprised and quite elated about my platinum approval, that may have just been ego but it felt good.

If you look at the cash back bonus and the Amazon Prime offer, you might find it better to go with the Preferred first, especially with the double percentage categories. Most people who are working the system get the better card and then downgrade prior to the annual fee. Both Blue cards should be the same as far as Amex is concerned so going for one over the other is not easier underwriting.

If I was you until June so Amex can see you’re spending on those months. WOW 25k? My highest is 6k but I only earn 20k annual with only 22 years.
Amex Gold:
Amex Jetblue 6k
Chase Sapphire Preferred 5k
Discover 3k
Capital One Venture 3k
Capital One Quiksilver 2k
Capital One MTV 500

The 25k is a business card not a personal card and our practice has done well. I was a bit surprised myself though since it's our business card with Amex.

It's really more of a matter of your credit than just time. Sounds like you need to sort out other matters first before worrying over applying. Have you reviewed all your reports to see if there's anything you can address?
