American express default

Postby MORICE BARDON » Thu Feb 06, 2014 12:55 pm

Hello,

I used to have an American Express green card which I defaulted paying for $5,000.00 on January 2013. I moved to another country and have been recently contacted by a collecting agency. So far I don't have a regular job so have no way to make the payments they are asking for. What may be the consequences of not paying? What kind of legal actions can they take against me? What would you advise me to do?

Depends what country you're in, if Amex does business there it could be as bad as going to jail/work camp in a foreign country until its paid off.

That's almost completely wrong.

Amex can't sue in a foreign country for a debt that was incurred in the US. Likewise, they can't sue in the US for a debt incurred in a foreign country.

That is not to say that OP is free and clear. The collection still appears on a credit report and Amex can pursue the claim if OP moves back to his home country.

It's actually probably completely wrong, but I figured exaggeration would make the OP realize that they did something very stupid. :-)

We really can't know their circumstances. I wouldn't want to judge. I do stupid things every day of my life. Most of them just aren't to that degree.

But if you were going to do that, you could have said they will sell you into slavery until the balance is paid off, and since you will be charged for the pile of rags you get to sleep 4 hours a night on, and for the bowl of soup with dead hornets and rat droppings in it, the balance only grows.....
