Regular Gold worth $30?

Postby gerry » Fri Jan 24, 2014 3:26 am

I currently hold a Green card and kind of itching to upgrade, but I travel once or twice a year so Platinum would be a waste, I buy gas about once a month, and as a single guy I don't have large grocery bills so PRG also seems like it'd be a waste for me. Is regular Gold really worthwhile over Green?
Amex Green $NPSL
Amex Blue $12000
MCU Platinum $9300
Discover More $7000
Chase Freedom $4500

Seems to me you've answered your own question.
Citi Forward ($10.1K), AmEx Blue Cash Everyday ($30K), Chase Freedom ($12.4K), Discover it ($5.5K), Barclaycard Arrival ($12.5K), L.L. Bean Visa ($5K). FICO 806 (TU), 812 (EQ), 806 (EX).

I had the Gold for a year and didn't really gain anything out of it except that was building a relationship with AMEX. In your case you might as well just keep the Green.
Wells Fargo Platinum 2.100 (5/2011-cld 7/12/14)
AmEx Platinum (6/12)
Barclays Apple (6/12)
AMEX Gold Delta (5/13)
Marriott Rewards (7/14)

My credit score
EQ: unknown
EX: 776
TU: 774

So I guess there's really no difference other than the preferred event seats? Anyone ever use this service?

I can think of one reason to get the Gold over a Green - Roadside Assistance. If you pay $57 a year for AAA, may as well drop it to $30 and upgrade to the Gold.

Of course, there are other AAA benefits...

I like applied for every Amex card on the same day and was instant denied for all of them. I think that even beats that Appbar guy.

This is why I have the Gold over say the Green. It's my AAA replacement on the cheap.

Well since I don't do a lot of driving and when I do I rarely leave the city so I guess Green is ideal for me.

I prefer the AAA as the Plus membership offers 100mile towing. 10mile down in the south won't get you anywhere. I have also used the jump start a few times. There is also the fuel... I wouldn't drop AAA if I got the Gold. But that's just me and my 1993 car.
