Considering applying for the Amex Blue or Green

Postby beriko9413 » Thu Jan 23, 2014 12:23 am

I am 19 years old and I currently have a credit score of a 705. I have had a Chase Freedom card for 7 months with a $700 CL which does not have a balance on it since I pay in full every month. I would like to open up an American Express so I could build a history with them and open up my second credit card.

Would it be more likely that I will be approved for the regular Blue Card or the Green Card?

Go for the Green.

It has an annual fee, but it is a 'charge' card, which must be paid in full each month.

This is less risk for the issuer (AMEX).

The Blue card is a credit card, and is much harder to get.

After a year of solid payment history then apply for the Blue.

At least that is my take on it.

I would also suggest either a Green or Gold Card. Reason why I mention gold is because it usually offers a better welcome bonus for only $30 more per year. Be sure to find and apply through a link giving you the bonus points though!

I also suggest IF you app and are approved for Green or Gold with an instant approval, immediately go for Blue and try to get it on the same hard pull.

Gold is quite a bit better for not much more cost.

Underwriting criteria are supposedly easier for the charge cards. You are aware that the Green is charge and not credit, right? Just verifying since you state "second credit card" above.

Better is always subjective (as well as not much more cost). How would it be better specifically for the OP? I don't see anything in the post that would really narrow it down to any specific charge card aside from the OP mentioning the Green.
