No app for Windows Phone users so I am stuck with the new mobile site. Not even a link on it to get access to the full site. Grrr.

And I did have a mental note of what offers I'd signed up for but some had spend minimums so I called AmEx (Not Amazon) to find out what it was. Only to realize the station I was at didn't qualify.

By the time I got past all the pre-recorded prompts and being transferred I figured I may as well stay on the line.

Ah, hadn't thought of that. Can you buy an electronic Amazon card from Staples, or just a physical card?

the fine print says physical gift cards are eligible, but e-gift cards are not

Same as with West Elm. No prob. Physical gifts card work fine.

Do stores charge tax for gift cards? Any addt'l fees?

No, purchases of gift cards are not taxed. Upon making a purchase, the redeemer is charged sales tax, and that value subtracts from the card balance. I have never heard of a merchant charging someone to purchase/use a gift card with the exception of pre-pay cards such as AmEx/Visa gift cards that have "activation fees" paid by the purchaser.
