How Long Should I Wait?

Postby dfm990 » Tue Nov 26, 2013 10:28 am

Hey everyone,

I just got accepted for an AmEx Green Card, (I had been rejected back in 2011 for the Zync) this is my first AmEx card. I had a few issues with my credit (4 derogatory marks) about 5 years ago due to medical problems and not having insurance. They Still haven't fallen off my record but despite that i got accepted. I currently have the BofA Americard Rewards($500, its currently semi-secured, i put a $90 deposit. I got this card in April to raise my CL, it will change to an unsecured CC after 12 Months, and i usually pay the the card off.) CapitalOne Platinum ($500... Cant get a CLI, I just have it in the drawer putting $10 on it every now and then.) Walmart Store Card (it had $300 limit, i just went on the website and requested a CLI and automatically got bumped to $450.) Kay Jewlers ($4000, Got it in Early October, utilization is at about 20% on this one, still paying off wife's wedding ring lol.) I also took out a secured loan at my credit union just to raise my credit, it was $1000 and paid it off in 6 months. And finally I'm currently paying off a school loan about 9k left. I make about 37k to 38k a year. And have about 7k in savings.

I am planing to use the Green Card instead of my debit card for everything except Gas and Groceries (BofA CC gives me 3% back on Gas and 2% back on groceries for up to 1.6k quarterly)

Anyone have an idea how long would i have to get a history with AmEx using the Green Card before i can apply and be accepted for their AmEx Blue Cash Preferred Card, which i hear is also a great rewards card. If i would get that i would use it as the primary Gas and Grocery Card and keep the BofA as a back up.

Any input would be appreciated, Thanks.

Good thing about Amex is that once you already have a card with them, and apply for another card it is only a soft pull. So you can apply today if you want.

Really? Just that easy? I always hear AmEx Credit cards are usually a lot harder to get versus their charge cards.

Delta Gold is their easiest charge. You could go for that if you are in doubt then PC to say a BCE.

tvirk888 isn't saying that you'll get approved or anything as far as underwriting requirements are concerned -- just that if you get denied it's only a soft instead of hard.

Yup! If you do get approved though, it is a hard hit. But wait 30 days to apply for the system to reset. You won't get approved if you apply soon.

Are you sure Delta Gold in a Charge card... Because, I have one, and I guess its a Credit Card with a hard-set credit limit reported.

Just to clear the apparent confusion, you CAN apply for a credit card after being approved for a charge card before 30 days. I know this for a fact because I did so this year and was approved no problem before 30 days was up.

Amex differentiates their charge cards such as Green, Gold etc and credit cards like Delta Gold, so you would be able to apply for a credit card before 30 days. It approved me just fine this last June.
