Can I upgrade a new recently opened card account?

Postby gijoe3181 » Sat Nov 16, 2013 9:28 pm

If anyone can give me some info, I just recently got a blue cash card. I've been wanting this card for the last 7 years and I was finally able to get it. But will it be a possible to possibly upgrade to Amex green or gold? I know it is a charge card and i initially got 2,500 limit. Should i wait a couple years and establish my history before asking for an upgrade? Or do I apply for it separately in a few years, and my credit score when i got this card was 724 on experian.

Why not keep the blue card and apply for a green or gold card? I don't think you can do a product change from a revolver to a charge card anyway(or vice versa). One of the great things about AMEX is that once you're in the family, if you get denied for a card, it's a soft pull.
In my Wallet:
  • Amex PRG NPSL[3-14, bd 91]
  • Sallie Mae MC $8000[1-14]
  • Chase Freedom $4700[1-14]
  • Discover It $2750[8-13]
  • BoA UCF Alumni Cash Rewards $5000 [3-15]
Sometimes in my Wallet:
  • GM BuyPower WEMC $5000[9-14]
  • Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex $7000[4-14]
  • Barclaycard Arrival WEMC $7000[3-14]
  • BoA Better Balance $3000[2-15]
In my sockdrawer: Amex BCE $1000[10-13, bd 91], OCCU Duck $10000 [11-13], The Sportsman's Guide Visa $8000[8-14], Chase Slate $4000 [9-14]Delta Gold Amex $2000 [2-15 bd 91], Diners Club MC $20000 [10-14] Commerce Bank Visa $2000 [3-15] Citi Double Cash $1000 [3-15]
Total CL: $90450

You cannot product change or upgrade a credit card to a charge card, if you would like a green or gold card just apply. Once you get a charge card, after 12 months you may upgrade to the next level charge card.

Congrats on the blue

Charge cards and credit cards are two different product types at Amex...there is no conversion between them. However, Amex likes keeping their customers in the fold and if you treat you new Blue Cash card well, it should be reasonably simple to apply for a charge card later.
Cards:
American Express Platinum (NPSL)
Penfed Platinum Reward Visa ($28K)
Chase Freedom Visa ($25K)
Fidelity American Express ($20K)
American Express Blue Cash Preferred ($20K)
Bank of America Cash Rewards MasterCard ($20K)
Citi Thank You Preferred Visa ($9.5K)
Chase Sapphire Preferred ($7.5K)
US Bank Cash + Visa Signature ($7K)
Discover IT ($4K)

I see why you'd want an Amex BCE/BCP but don't see why Amex Green is of interest.

Backdating for one reason. It is also possible that your internal limit could allow you a higher limit on your charge than on a revolver. Also kind of back to limit but one guy got approved here for 500 bucks, that's kind of limiting a charge would allow him to run the 1% stuff on the charge and he could put gas and groceries only on the blue card for max rewards without worrying too much (hopefully) about hitting the limit, if he makes multiple payments.

Plus the charge cards have some perks, if they are useful to you then I could see it. Some they won't be useful for.
