How To Get FREE ShopRunner Membership w/ Free 2-Day Shipping

Postby proudsoccermom1 » Wed Nov 06, 2013 1:47 pm

American Express just announced a NEW cardholder benefit; a free ShopRunner Membership.

When you enroll using your American Express card, you get*free 2-day shipping and a complimentary ShopRunner membership which normally costs $79 per year.

Just in time for holiday shopping!

An "eligible Card" means an American Express U.S. Consumer or Small Business credit or charge Card that is not cancelled and that is issued to you by a U.S. banking subsidiary of American Express. Prepaid cards and products, American Express Corporate Cards and American Express-branded cards or account numbers issued by other financial institutions are not eligible.

I enrolled today and discovered exactly zero shops from which I'd actually buy something. Nice if it works for your habits, I guess.

I signed up for this service recently. My purchases shipped quickly as promised. On the surface, it looks quite useful.

Do all Amex consumer credit and charge cardholders get this benefit forever (or as long as it remains)? Or is free membership limited to a few months or a year unless you have a Platinum card? Is there any sneaky billing if you close or change the number of your enrolled Amex, or do they just ask you if you want to enter a new card?

I haven't changed card numbers, but it certainly is available for all Amex levels. My only Amex card is the Costco True Earnings, and I have been enjoying this for a while now.

I was browsing ShopDiscover and saw the retailer I had used my Amex with for ShopRunner was offering 20% off on ShopDiscover. My initial reaction was a little frustration - I thought I could have saved $40 or $50 through Discover. I built a duplicate 'shopping basket' through SD and found...the SD discounts only applied to goods at 'full price' or only slightly discounted. Everything I had previously bought there had already come with one discount or another, available independently of any credit card. So using the Amex got me free 2-day shipping, whereas '20% off' on SD offered the same item prices, but would have also charged shipping.

I'm sure there are some good things on SD, but probably a lot of the discounts there aren't of real value.

That was one of the very first things I noticed when I first got my Amex card two months ago and I immediately signed up for a free membership. That's one of my favorite perks about having one of their cards so far though I already had a free Shoprunner membership prior because the website itself offered me that. Either way, so glad I never have to worry about paying around 80 bucks a year for it. Really comes in handy when I'm ordering pizza from Dominos. Free delivery really makes ordering large pizzas way cheaper.
