Amex makes it kind of a pain to redeem rewards for BCP

I did that for the first time today. So after 3 months I've now broken even with the annual fee. They did make it kind of a pain to do that insisting you enter your security code then your phone and email and yadda yadda yadda. They don't do that when you go to make a payment, I guess for that all that stuff for "security purposes" isn't quite so important!

I have had that system ask me for my security code and phone # several times in a row, for the same transaction. Some kind of brain fart? Maybe they made the healthcare.gov site too?

You need heavy security to make sure an imposter doesn't redeem rewards dollars TO THE ACCOUNT TO WHICH THEY ARE ATTACHED.
Chase Freedom ($2.5K, 10/2009)
Discover it ($6K; 03/2011)
Amex BCE ($19.5K; 02/2013 - 2011 BD)

Yeah I got a kick out of that too. It's like for payments we won't hassle you at all, hey we're glad you're doing that, but if you want to redeem your rewards, well we have to protect your rewards by ensuring that it's you redeeming them :) That's what they'd TELL us of course, but in reality the subtle message is they'd much prefer to get paid than to pay you!

Other companies I've redeemed rewards with (Associated, US Bank, Discover, etc) didn't make it any more of a hassle than paying them.

it could also be because anyone can make a payment for you, before I turned 18 my mom paid for my phone bill and credit cards, and if I wasn't so insistent she would have throughout college (although there were times I regret my I-want-to-be-independent-stance)
