Approved for Blue!

Postby otter » Wed Oct 30, 2013 4:47 pm

Just took Member's advice, figuring it would be a soft pull if I was declined and was surprised when I was approved. I only have a $1000 limit, but I'm pretty sure I'll do the 61 day CLI request. I had thought of applying for the Preferred Card, but I really don't buy all that much groceries to justify the $75 AF so just went for the everyday card. It's been a good day... got my green in the mail today and blue will be on it's way soon enough.

The only thing that worried me was the Barclaycard 6 month "double secret probation", but after thinking about it some... I realize it wouldn't bother me all that much if they AA'd me for too many accounts opened after their's was opened. The utilization wouldn't be missed all that much(since blue is almost as much and I'll probably get increases from my GE cards soon and I also have the Crap One step increase as well). In any case, Barclaycard's probably getting sockdrawered anyway.
In my Wallet:
  • Amex PRG NPSL[3-14, bd 91]
  • Sallie Mae MC $8000[1-14]
  • Chase Freedom $4700[1-14]

  • BoA UCF Alumni Cash Rewards $5000 [3-15]
Sometimes in my Wallet:
  • GM BuyPower WEMC $5000[9-14]
  • Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex $7000[4-14]
  • Barclaycard Arrival WEMC $7000[3-14]
  • BoA Better Balance $3000[2-15]
In my sockdrawer: Amex BCE $1000[10-13, bd 91], OCCU Duck $10000 [11-13], The Sportsman's Guide Visa $8000[8-14], Chase Slate $4000 [9-14]Delta Gold Amex $2000 [2-15 bd 91], Diners Club MC $20000 [10-14] Commerce Bank Visa $2000 [3-15] Citi Double Cash $1000 [3-15]
Total CL: $90450

Could you (or someone) elaborate on that? Does Amex give an increase after 61 days if you call and request it? Is this only on small lines of credit, or all?

On AMEX revolving cards, you are allowed to ask for 3X your current limit credit line (in my case an increase from $1000 to $3000) after two months of your account being opened(from what I've gathered, the opening date is the day you get the welcome e-mail with the last four digits of your card number, not the day the card is activated or approved). This increase isn't guaranteed, but there is a high success rate if you pay much more than the minimum (or preferably PFI) and if the last soft experian pull Amex does before you ask is pretty clean(no bads, low utilization, and no excess hard pulls).

I think this applies to both small and large lines of credit, but I've heard it's not wise to ask for more than a $25,000 CL from AMEX unless you're willing to have them do some invasive digging into your financial life...

From what I've read, they ask for documents if your total line with them becomes 35k or more (or would become 35k or more I should say).

Some people think it's 25k but from what I've read (I wouldn't know, I"m at 2k for life on my cards with them) 25k isn't the issue but the total of 35k is where they start to ask for that, according to posts I've seen on another board.

Is that including charge card, or just revolvers? I'm trying to decide if I can go 3x on my SPG without the hassle of a F/R or having to fax in stuff.

Oh and Congrats Otter!

That's the thing though, there isn't a reported limit, but there is a limit. Once I was on the phone with an AmEx CSR and she told me how much I could spend without calling and getting approval for a higher amount, so I was just wondering if that amount was factored in. If so it'd put me way over 35K already, if not I'm only at 20, so I could go to 15K on SPG and be OK.

The 35k limit is just for revolvers. Your internal limit for your charge card is something different, some people end up getting really huge limits with those without being asked for tax documents.
