On AMEX revolving cards, you are allowed to ask for 3X your current limit credit line (in my case an increase from $1000 to $3000) after two months of your account being opened(from what I've gathered, the opening date is the day you get the welcome e-mail with the last four digits of your card number, not the day the card is activated or approved). This increase isn't guaranteed, but there is a high success rate if you pay much more than the minimum (or preferably PFI) and if the last soft experian pull Amex does before you ask is pretty clean(no bads, low utilization, and no excess hard pulls).
I think this applies to both small and large lines of credit, but I've heard it's not wise to ask for more than a $25,000 CL from AMEX unless you're willing to have them do some invasive digging into your financial life...
