Already have AmEx charge card, am I eligible for bonus?

Postby CCBaller » Wed Oct 30, 2013 12:45 pm

Hey, y'all.

So glad I found this great collection of credit card knowledge! Here's my current situation:

I currently have three Amex cards: Green Charge (personal), Delta Gold Skymiles, and the Gold Premier Rewards Charge (business). At some point, I would like to get the personal Amex Platinum charge.

Is it true that I will not qualify for the sign up bonus if I have had a personal Amex Charge card within the past 12 months? Should I close my Green Charge card in order to qualify for the Platinum signup bonus one year from now? What is the best strategy?

How does closing a personal Charge effect your credit score? For example, I have charged over $15k/month on my Green card. Is this being reported as a credit card with a $15k limit?

I know I have asked multiple questions all in one post and I thank you all for your answers in advance!

Generally, you need to have all personal charge cards closed for a year to get a new sign up bonus for a new card. You may be able to find an offer for bonus points to upgrade to green to platinum.

Agree with djrez4.

You can also call and ask them. Worse case is you get what you have now - nothing. So you can only win by trying.

I upgraded my charge card and had to ask for extra points. It took a while but they granted me 5000 pts. Of course I have been a member since 1995.
Cards:
Chase Sapphire Preferred
Marriott Rewards
Citi Hilton
Barclay Arrival
AMEX BCE (member since 95)
Chase Freedom
Discover It
Wells Fargo Platinum
Barclaycard (Apple)
Local Credit Union Visa (buy local!)

FICO Scores:
TU: 824 (Aug 2014)
Experian: 789 (Aug 2014)
Equifax: 807 (Aug 2014)

It's not really reported as a limit, but if 15K is the highest you have charged, it is considered the limit for utilization purposes, yes. It won't affect your credit score in any significant way. If you want the Platinum and want to wait a year for the signup bonus, closing your Green and waiting 12 months is the only way to go.
Amex Platinum
Amex BCP 21K
Amex SPG 5K
Barclaycard Arrival Plus WEMC 5K
Chase Sapphire Preferred 23.5K
Credit Union 10K
Discover IT 7.75K

Not sure if my case was anything special, but my first Amex was the Zync, shortly followed by the Green a year later. I believe the Zync bonus at the time was either 20,000-30,000 pts, and the Green 10,000 MR pts or vice-versa. But, I got both bonuses for both cards, after hitting appropriate spending thresholds of course.

So YMMV, but I got both bonuses. Sucks for my Blue Sky acct however; I applied on a day that any bonus links were being worked on for maintenance or similar, so I couldn't use the click-thru links. I knew I wanted the card anyway, so I applied nonetheless; I asked for a bonus later, but had already been approved for the card so it was a no-go.
Currently: American Express Blue Sky, American Express Zync, Chase Freedom Visa, Capital One Newcomers--->converted to Capital One Quicksilver Mastercard NO AF

Thanks a million, y'all!

So, just to be clear, are y'all sure that I'd have to wait an entire year and not just ninety days? I've heard conflicting reports.

Tex
