Is there another credit inquiry when upgrading cards?

Postby Vandalized2 » Thu Oct 17, 2013 2:44 pm

If I was to request going from AMEX GOLD to AMEX GREEN would that require a credit inquiry? I have read some posts where if you dont wait atleast 13 months and pay one of the higher AF that you will get a credit check. I am trying to avoid that but I do want to go to the Green card because unfortunately I do not run a lot of money through my GOLD because i also applied for the BCE at the same time and it had the 0% INTRO for 12 billing cycles. So I am throwing everything on that card.

Any help would be appreciated!

American Express much like many other credit grantors will not allow a product change until the account is 13 months old. The only time AMEX has performed a hard pull on me is in response to an application for a new credit/charge card.
AMEX Green Card - NPSL [Member Since 1995] ;)
AMEX Everyday Card ($25,000) 6/14 Backdated to 1995 - For 20% Extra Points Benefit
Chase Freedom Visa Signature ($17,000) - For 5% rotating categories
Citi ThankYou Preferred Visa Signature ($16,000) - 2% dining
Discover IT Humane Society Design ($16,500) - For 5% rotating categories
Firestone ($2,600) - For 0% financing
Home Depot ($10,000) - For 0% financing
JCPenney Credit Card ($7,000) - For special discounts
Sam's Club MasterCard - ($20,000) - 5% off gas at any fuel pump
Wells Fargo Personal Line of Credit - ($15,000)

FICO's - 767 EX, 778 EQ, 790 TU [02/2015]

I tried to upgrade my Gold to the Gold preferred a couple years, and when I called, then rep informed me that I couldn't upgrade until after the 13 months.

I recently applied for the Blue card and was approved with a soft pull, so I'm not sure they hard pull even when applying for new cards.... so I guess I'm really just repeating (and confirming) what Terry stated...

You got a brand new card with a soft pull? I've never heard of that before. Are you sure it was a soft? When you are a member the way they've always done it for me is if I'm approved it's a hard pull, if declined it's not. That would be something totally new and I find that hard to believe. If it's really true great you got a gift there but I would check to be sure because that's not SOP for them.

As far as upgrading after the 13 months (which is due to the CARD act they will typically quote you) then it should not be a hard pull.

I would like to mention you can do any product change as long as the annual fee does not go over the initial fee. This rule is for the first 13 months as stated. If you want to change from a 0 annual fee card to another 0 annual fee or a 95 fee card to 0 fee card they will do it whenever you want. Had it done in Feb. Went from Delta with 95 annual fee to BCE that has a 0 annual fee a month after the delta was a approved.

Maybe I was mistaken, so I'll be double checking, but I don't remember seeing a hard pull last time I checked... but I could be wrong (which wouldn't be the first time).
