Buying a car with AMEX

Postby AMEXAT19 » Sun Sep 22, 2013 3:54 pm

This is just to let those of you know how my car buying experience went. So basically I went to the dealership for an 02 BMW 325ci, when it came down to pay the gentleman asked me if I would be paying cash or financing. I told him cash, he futher explained if I were paying with a card that AMEX was no limit and that all others were up to a $5,000 limit. Of course I paid with my AMEX an it went right through, no calls prior or anything. This was my experience.

Hmmmmm... I have never bought a used car but my experience is with a new car, there is always a limit of $5k.

Yes... that is even with a Centurion card.

Dealers apparently do not want to pay the fees against their commission.

The next time I buy a new car, I would ask they take the card or I go to another dealer.

To get the reward points. Many years ago I purchased nearly $20,000 of furniture for my new house on my AMEX card and less than 30 days later PIF. At that time, a domestic plane ticket could be purchased with the amount of points that transaction yielded. Later that year, I flew to NYC on the proceeds of that single purchase.
AMEX Green Card - NPSL [Member Since 1995]
AMEX Everyday Card ($25,000)
Chase Visa Signature ($17,000)
Citi Visa Signature ($16,000)
Discover IT ($17,500)
Sam's Club MasterCard - ($20,000)
Wells Fargo Personal Line of Credit - ($15,000)

FICO's - 803 EX, 805 EQ, 799 TU [01/2017]

It's mainly for the points and depending on what you buy, purchase protection. The way I see it, I've got the cash anyway so why not get something more out of it.

I put over $5k on my card when I bought my last car. The dealer didn't say peep.
