Am I Expecting Too Much ?

Postby Wildcat_1 » Fri Aug 23, 2013 11:34 pm

Hi all

As those that have viewed my threads know, we signed my wife up for her first AMEX (BCP) the other day. The card turned up yesterday and we activated. We have already started spending on it when we noticed that cardmatch.com now has the $250 sign up bonus for $1k spend rather than the $150 sign up for the same spend that we had completed.

I reached out to AMEX tonight both by live chat, SM and special handling team and they all said 'tough' basically we cannot change the offer you signed up for and we're not willing to do anything about it. I'll be 100% honest I was not impressed with their customer service at all and I don't mean just because they were not willing to budge.

So my question to all of you both new and legacy AMEX customers is Am I Expecting Too Much ? You can be honest, I won't be offended but was amazed that within 24 hours of activation I ran into this kind of stance. Especially when Chase on the other hand match offers and so on.

Thanks as always
WC

I would think they would do it as a courtesy, but I'm sure you would have to go through hurdles to convince them. I had the same thing happen when I applied for the BCP last year, I noticed through card match I was pre approved for their $250 signup bonus and 12.99 Apr after 0% promo instead of my current 22.24 apr. I personally didn't want to go through endless phone calls to convince them and just left it at that. Good luck if you continue trying.

Amex, unlike Chase, does not match offers... ever.

What Chase does isn't relevant. If you're expecting Chase service on on AmEx BCP then you are expecting too much.

When I got my blue sky card, I got in the same days mail, the card, and solicitation to apply for the card offering a better bonus. I called, told them that, and got the bonus points. It did take a while, and the csr I spoke to said they had to forward it to someone else. It might have been because they were soliciting me, but I don't know.

That is like being mad about someone not honoring an expired coupon.

It's actually completely different. Wildcat_1 is trying to get an offer that came out after they applied, not get an offer that they found that had expired before they applied. It would be like a shop saying that you can't get a refund because they lowered the price $100 since you bought the item two days ago.

In this case, you picked a not-as-good offer. So yes, it would be asking for too much. But in general with amex, you are not asking for too much. I have had a bcp for the past 2 years. Interest rate 21%, when all other accounts that I have charge me anywhere from 7.1% to 15.99% max with high-reward programs.
What I have found deceptive with AMEX are their little letters sent in the mail promoting a new reward program that actually does not materialize. For instance, I received early July a letter telling me that they upgraded the bcp reward program with a 2% cashback at restaurants starting July 28. False. It never happened. My guess is that they just wanted to keep the business away from citi who truly launched a 2pts per dollar reward at restaurants with their thank you card.
In other words, AMEX are not the most fair-play in the business...
