Invitations

Postby im_mr_awesome » Fri Aug 16, 2013 10:28 am

I don't currently have an Amex in my wallet, but I would like one. Not the biggest deal if it takes a while though, as my Discover, Amazon, and Citi are decent enough for my normal spending.

That being said, I always get a little excited when I see an email from Amex. Unfortunately, it's always an invitation but I've never been approved. I received an invite for Green, then Blue Sky, and just now for SPG. It's always with Bonus Offers.

I didn't think a company would bother sending out invites if you're not reasonably qualified. Am I just in the unlucky boat of people Amex doesn't like?

EDIT: I realize my scores aren't where they should be to apply for Amex, which is why I'm not applying. Learned my lesson last time I applied for Green a while back.
Scores on the mend...
FICO: 650 (Discover/TU, 6/23/2016)
Cards I Use Citi Double Cash, Chase Amazon, Capital One QuickSilver
Sock Drawer Discover IT, Citi Diamond Preferred, AE Visa, QuickSilver One, Walmart CC, CareCredit, CreditOne (keeping for history for now)
Short Goal Reach 680

Invites and even preapprovals really don't mean much. It's certainly possible to receive even a preapproval and not get approved. If your scores aren't where AmEx wants them to be it's not really matter of lucky versus unlucky. It's not just random luck.

By luck, I just meant unlucky enough to be teased while I'm still rebuilding my scores. I dream of the day of instant approval, but until then it's pay down debt, increase AAoA. MyFico would be so proud.

I'd wait until you get in at least the range of 650 preferably 670-680 on EX, which is what they pull. If you are marginal they may pull all 3 so the higher the better your odds. Once you hit about 670-680 I would say go for it and see what happens.

My first card with amex was the regular gold card, and I believe my score then was about 690. Instant approval. I was denied for the BCE at the same time, however.

Chase: United MileagePlus Club, Sapphire Preferred, Amazon Rewards
Barclaycard Arrival World Mastercard
HSBC Cash or Fly World Mastercard

Some time back I was flat declined with a 710 FICO after getting a gold card pre-screened offer in the mail.

I never respond to email offers. Most are spam and some phish for personal info.

However; I've had an Amex Plat for a couple years now and at times have charged more than all my other CLs combined. No issues. They don't even soft me anymore for the big charges.

I'm not even considering applying until my scores reach 720-740 range. I'm done with the toy limits. Time to trim some bad cards and bring on the good ones.

I think I'll go for a charge card first so I have better odds, then go for a revolver soon after so it doesn't hurt to apply.
