American Express verification questions

Postby natalie1981 » Tue Aug 13, 2013 10:52 am

Hi guys, I need help. Basically I'm located outside the US and I have an American Express Virtual credit card. I use this to shop at online stores in the US since some stores doesn't accept internationally issued credit cards however I've encountered some problems while using it since some stores need to verify that I actually own the card which is fine but one of the first questions they would ask me is the phone number on the back of the credit card.

Since it's a virtual card I don't have a number to give them and when I try to explain that it's a virtual card they tell me they can't verify it. So can I ask what's the phone number on the back of an amex card? Is it the same as the one on their website?

I was hoping I could also ask here the usual verification questions that stores ask to verify your amex card so that my next transaction won't be declined. I know that the billing address, cvv number, expiration date is usually asked, oh and someone told me they were also asked what street is nearest the street on my billing address, anything else?

Not trying to be paranoid, but your post sounds pretty strange. I mean why would you want to know what the verification questions are before they even ask them, such as billing address etc, isn't that information you would have if it's your card?

Not sure what to make of this.

The phone number on the back of the card varies. No one will ever ask you that as a verification question. Similarly, no one will ever ask you which street is nearest your billing address because the billing address is often a post office bow or the nearest street could be ambiguous.

If you have a GCash card then you are going to need to call them to get the information you are looking for. Since they give you fake US billing and shipping addresses, you are going to have problems in many cases. Merchants are not obligated to take those kinds of cards that trick them into thinking you are in the US. We actually have laws that limit shipping certain items out of the country so you might be running into merchants' own security procedures. My suggestion is to call American Express to confirm that what you have paid for is legitimate. If they say it is then they will tell you how to use it.

I had to look it up, too, but it's legitimate. Banks in both Singapore and the Philippines (and I'm guessing others) offer virtual Amex cards that allow you to shop US stores that don't normally accept foreign-issued cards.

I assume you're using the GCash version, because that's the only virtual Amex I can find from the Philippines. I've never heard anyone ask for the phone number on the back of the card to verify ownership and, quite frankly, I don't know how they'd be able to verify a card based on what you tell them.

I suggest that a good first step would be to call customer service for GCash to see what they say.

Thanks for the replies. And yeah, I do have the gcash amex card. I already tried asking the provider but they couldn't help me, they told me to tell the merchant that it's a virtual card so there's no physical card. Also, the virtual card is legit since the provider is one of the biggest companies in the country however I can't call American Express since they deal with customers who have physical cards and they redirect me to the provider.

One merchant seemed to understand and proceeded to ask me other questions like billing address, cvv, expiration, etc, however some would not proceed to verify me once I told them it's a virtual card but all merchants that tried to verify me had the same first question and that is the phone number at the back of the card.

I wanted to know the verification questions beforehand so I could prepare for them. The billing address, cvv, expiration I already know since I have them but if it's something like the street nearest the street of my billing address, I need to google maps it first, that question was an actual verification question asked to someone who also has the same
Virtual card i have.

So you mean Amex cards phone number differs from each card? Thanks. BTW, the billing address they provided me is not a fake address but a cargo forwarder. When I shop online this is the address that I use as a shipping address.
