Taking back the title...

Postby AMEXPlatino86 » Wed Jul 31, 2013 7:18 pm

I noticed that a lot of you guys are saying that AMEX has lost that Je ne sais quoi or elite status that it once had. Since I'm new (or somewhat new) to the credit game again, just curious on what they should do to put themselves back as the number one card it once was?
Wells Fargo Platinum 2.100 (5/2011-cld 7/12/14)
AmEx Platinum (6/12)
Barclays Apple (6/12)
AMEX Gold Delta (5/13)
Marriott Rewards (7/14)

My credit score
EQ: unknown
EX: 762
TU: 752

My opinion:
1) acceptance - in Europe it's horrible and here in the US it keeps getting worst
2) benefits - most cards this days offers concierge, travel/rental insurance, return protection and etc for lower if none AF. If they wanna charge higher AF it should offer better and/or exclusive benefits.
3) exclusivity - anyone can get one as long as their credit is not a mess or too new.

1. First and foremost work on increasing merchant acceptance.
2. Second and just as important, bring the customer service back to the US. I simply don't believe they can't afford it as plenty of cards with lower merchant and customer fees do this and make a profit. When I talk with a rep I can barely understand who screws up what I ask for, that to me doesn't signal "elite" anything, that signals marketing dressing up a sow's ear and selling it as a silk purse.

If they just did those two things, with all the perks they offer, I could live with less than stellar rewards straight up honestly.

As a cent holder, I have to say Amex has done their part to ensure my experience and treatment is above approach.

I do agree they have slipped a bit on their other products though.

Their benefits should be revisited and made better across the board.

As mentioned above- bring their CS back to the US.

I remember when I was younger having an Amex (even the green one) was a big deal. Now having an Amex is like "meh". (It wasn't hard for me to let the PRG go the same day I got it after having "issues" with their offshore CSR)

So like what the thread says, I hope they take back the title... Maybe I'll give the PRG or the Platinum a go.
In my wallet:
AmEx PRG/ BoH Hawaiian Airlines WEMC / Chase Freedom /

In my sock drawer:
AmEx HHonors & BCE

Acceptance

Postby Reclusive46 » Thu Aug 01, 2013 10:46 am

Here in the UK the only issue I really have is acceptance in the rest of Europe.

Its fine here in the UK (apart from Wales, pretty much only chains seem to accept it in Wales but I imagine its because there are barely any Amex cardmembers there). My local Indian actually only takes Amex or debit cards.

They have been trying to improve it though, if you go to New Zealand (Apart from indepedent card rentals in NZ lol) or Australia its pretty much accepted everywhere, probably better than Canada.

France is improving.

Not that any of this matters as even in the Platinum and Centurion card in the UK still charge foriegn transaction fees!!! (2.99%)

With my US card and using it in the US I have no real acceptance problems. While I'm not living in the US very often (Have an apartment in NYC), I haven't come across anywhere that doesn't take Amex. I've even come across places that only take Amex!
Amex UK Platinum Charge Card
Amex Blue Cash USA
Amex US Gold Corporate Card
World MasterCard Capital One UK (Free abroad + Cashback + Free Cash Withdrawals with no interest)

That's an interesting discovery. I wonder why 1. There are very few AMEX users in UK including Wales and 2. Why like you said for example that place only takes AMEX and debit cards.

They need bonus categories for their charge cards. I'm paying a ridiculous annual fee for bonuses that aren't as lucrative as other cards.

Humm I see only the BCP in your signature. It has a 75 dollar annual fee but if you spend enough on groceries you MORE than get it back and come out a nice chunk of money ahead. If you really can't make that pay, switch to the BCE which has no annual fee. And if you can make it pay, I don't really see the issue.
