Restaurant Bonus - Membership Rewards

Postby wizozzie » Tue Jul 30, 2013 12:46 pm

(ADMINS: please let me know if I linked something wrong, it's not intentional)

AmEx/MR Fans:

When Zync Paks went down I really got mad because it had a Restaurants Pak that gave double points (2X) for any restaurant points. That alone made the Zync worth it for me because I spend enough at restaurants to pay back the Zync AF ($25) and the Pak fee (was $25).

If you are looking for Restaurant Bonuses under the Membership Rewards program, look to a Co-Brand card that isn't listed on the regular portions of the AmEx site. It's the Mercedes Benz American Express card. No, not the Platinum, the regular one. You know, the revolver?

I think that people forget about that card but if you are crazy like me and put all your spend on AmEx and have both Plat and PRG, you may find you can save a few $ by getting rid of your PRG and using the MB Revolver instead.

From the application website:

AF = $95
5x POINTS ON SELECT MERCEDES-BENZ PURCHASES
3x POINTS ON GASOLINE AT U.S. GAS STATIONS FOR EACH TRANSACTION OF $400 OR LESS
2x POINTS AT U.S. RESTAURANTS
1x POINTS ON OTHER PURCHASES

The multipliers are better than the PRG for Gasoline, and have the added benefit of 2X on restaurants. You give up the 2X Grocery and 3X Tix Direct from Airline .

I don't understand why there aren't more multipliers for Restaurants across AmEx cards because that is a very high profile spend. Hopefully the rumors of AmEx Zync getting revamped are true and we get multipliers back for more interesting categories.

I would honestly jump for joy if they bring back 2x pts on restaurants; that's most of my spending. I'm considering upgrading to the Blue Sky Preferred in six months strictly because of 2x back on restaurants, but it's still too early to say what the Zync is going to behold, if it comes back.

Then again, I doubt the new rewards tier(s) will be substantial, if it's going to be anything like it was before (MRE points not as valuable as standard MR, etc). Best thing I have going on for me right now in the Amex world is the effective 1.33% cashback towards travel w/ the Blue Sky standard.
Currently: American Express Blue Sky, American Express Zync, Chase Freedom Visa, Capital One Newcomers--->converted to Capital One Quicksilver Mastercard NO AF
