AMEX as new American Airlines CC partner?

Postby tigerhunt2011 » Mon Jul 22, 2013 11:53 am

There are rumblings over on FlyerTalk regarding the New American Airlines and the existing relationships with Citi and Barclays. There's a rumor (just a rumor for now), that American Express will be the new provider, with a 50,000 mile offer as soon as September. I remember hearing about some vague "exciting changes" on here last week, can anyone shed some light on this?

Can you link to a post? I search "American Express" in the Citi AA thread and get seven posts about the current Citi offerings.

EDIT: Found it.

I'm inclined to agree. Citi isn't going anywhere.

If this were true and the card had some solid perks, I'd sign up for the bonus.

I hope Amex takes over. Citi is useless in my own opinion. I had a savings account with them a few years ago and the "no fee" account with a Direct Deposit was a lie. Fine print which wasn't mentioned said it had to be at least 2k a month. I was not planning on 2k a month to the Citi account. More like 200...

Hope this is true. I'm in an American hub and I don't like Citi, so this would be awesome if it does happen.

I hope that's the case, as I think Amex would be a good partner for AA. But I think someone here mentioned to google the relationship between Citi and American (I think it was Djrez) and It was pretty interesting the things I read. From what I was able to glean from the articles that were posted about this, found on The Point's Guy's Blog " Citi has a serious amount of money invested in AMR – in 2009 they pre-purchased $1 billion dollars’ worth of frequent flyer miles which were secured by $2.58 billion in AMR assets, including the AAdvantage program itself. In the filing, Citi stated: “Were the Agreements to be rejected, Citibank would have a multi-billion-dollar claim secured by some of the Debtors’ most valuable assets, including virtually the entirety of the AAdvantage Program itself.”

But honestly, I would like for it be Amex to be the partner airline of AA (they would be better then Citi), but with the money Citi has invested with AA, I really don't think Amex will be a partner anytime soon. That's my 0.2

Seriously?

American is NOT going to cancel its billion-dollar contract with Citi. Amex will NOT be issuing AAdvantage rewards cards.

What's with the mass hysteria?

More unusual things have happened, especially in other countries. Egg (Owned by Citi) used to be in-charge of the AA card in the UK and when Egg was sold to BarclayCard AA pulled the whole deal as they were concerned with customer service, MBNA quickly took over the agreement.

In a way i hope it does happen and in a way it doesn't as i currently have the citi aa advantage executive elite world card with them and i like it a lot. They gave me a starting limit of 10k where as Amex would only give me on a SPG 2k so i can imagine what they give on this card.
