2013 Orvis Visa Credit Card VS. American Express?

Postby megaron » Thu Jul 18, 2013 2:24 pm

When I was living in Wisconsin I was talked into filling out an application for the Orvis credit card while shopping there. I don't regret it, as it's been a pretty good card to me. But now that I live in Michigan there is only one Orvis store location in the state and it's in Royal Oak which is roughly 50 miles from me. Who knows why that's the case because if you live in that city you don't have much need for sporting goods and fly fishing gear ya know.

I don't want to have a bunch of credit cards to keep track which leads me to ask you guys for advice. Would I be better off keeping this that I have or going for the American Express card that gives cash back on gas and groceries. If you don't know the Orvis Visa here is a link to it https://www.firstbankcard.com/orvis/‎

The 3x points at their stores is nice but then again I'm not shopping much there anymore. In fact my last two purchases have been with the mail order catalog. Both it and the American Express give 1% on other stuff. I guess my hesitation with making the switch is this credit card will then disappear from my credit report after I cancel it.

If you get down there to Royal Oak once in a while keep it and use it there.

No reason you can't get an Amex if you like as well. I would not recommend closing the Orvis if you plan to until you get the Amex card or whatever else you want. You may want to hang onto the Orvis, but if not at least wait till you have a replacement (or replacements).

By the way the link did not work for me.

Where in WI are you? I have heard tho that it is a baddie on your report if you have an account that is dormant. If I keep my credit card from Orvis open won't that hurt my score? To be perfectly honest my life is boring and I don't spend a lot of money which makes it hard for me to ever have more than one cc and use it a decent amount.

edit. I realized something I totally forgot about. Even if I get an American Express I will still need my Orvis Visa or another V/MC because not everywhere takes Express.
