Hate to admit it but....

Postby MemberSince99 » Wed Jul 10, 2013 6:51 am

I have not been using my Amex cards since changing checking accounts and they locked me out of paying on the cards until the statement cuts. (I'm not going to use what I can't pay on).

And I have to admit, honestly, I really don't miss the cards at all from a day to day use perspective.

I'm currently using the FNBO card day to day along with the Associated card (not even the CSP). And in terms of day to day use there really isn't any difference. A card is a card. But the funny thing is, it's making me think that even after I can pay Amex, maybe I'll just keep using these other cards for the most part - they gave him high "non-toy" limits and I don't expect much if any growth out of the newer "prime" cards EVER. With Associated's card I can even put all my expenses for the whole month on the card, let the balance report and still not worry about utilization hurting me (it would be best to pay mid- month for scoring purposes but it wouldn't really hurt, where with the others it would start to).

Where I'll use Discover is whereever they have 5%, like gas right now, I can't use it because my statement cuts in a few days, but after that it will be my gas card as long as it gives 5%. When it doesn't, I'll switch. And I know, to the FICO fanatics I'm horribly "abusing" the hell out of poor Discover by using the promotion they freely offered me, I'm damn near a terrorist for that! So let them come and torture me with tales of their lovely garden I guess that would have to be worse than waterboarding...but seriously I'm thinking of just giving the business to the high limit cards and the rest get what's left. And I'm kind of surprised that in a practical sense I really don't miss using the Amex cards. I thought i would.

With the exception of AMEX gift cards, I've never carried Amex with me, and it's never hurt my spending. I still have nice dinners, still get purchase protection, and still have a concierge for restaurant reservations. I'm not saying Amex doesn't have a place in my wallet, but I am saying unless it's the BCP or PRG, I doubt I'll use it that much. I already have an unlimited PIF 1% card, an unlimited 2% restaurants and gas card, and I have a rotating 5% card. I even have a 1% travel card.

I am at a point now where I can say my credit and rewards needs are met without Amex. It's an eery feeling, I know.
Scores on the mend...
FICO: 650 (Discover/TU, 6/23/2016)
Cards I Use Citi Double Cash, Chase Amazon, Capital One QuickSilver
Sock Drawer Discover IT, Citi Diamond Preferred, AE Visa, QuickSilver One, Walmart CC, CareCredit, CreditOne (keeping for history for now)
Short Goal Reach 680

To each his own, right?

When it comes to using a card to make a purchase, every card is exactly the same, of course. No one other than you really cares what piece of plastic slides through the slot at the point of sale. (If they do, they're superficial jerks.)

I like maximizing rewards if I can and select what I carry and what I use for specific purchases based upon that goal. However, I may go through a MemberSince99 "purge" sometime in the next few months to clear out the sock drawer. There are some new applications on the horizon now that we've closed on the house! Gotta build up those points balances.

Do what works for you.

Two weeks ago my Amex cards included the Business Plat, the Delta SkyMiles Gold and the standard Gold card. Today it's just the Business Plat and Delta SkyMiles. I cancelled my Gold card last week. I just couldn't justify the card any longer. My Business Plat stays in my drawer and only surfaces when I go on a business trip. Delta SkyMiles stays in my wallet because I want to carry an Amex card in wallet just in case I come across a real good deal for Delta mileage points. You know, I don't miss my Gold card at all and carrying the Plat in my wallet for show is just...well, wrong! A piece of plastic should not define who you are. I'll admit, I'm old enough to remember when American Express was the big dog on the credit card block. But in today's world, that's no longer the case. Amex is still a symbol of class and style and will always be so. I have no intention of cancelling my Business Plat or my Delta SkyMiles cards. Amex definitely has a place in my spending plan. But other credit card companies (banks) are calling Amex out, matching Amex's bennies and, arguably, challenging Amex monopoly as the premier status symbol.

Besides that, Amex points seem to take forever to post, not that I much care about them anyway to be honest, but with all my other cards they post right after the statement cuts. Not Amex, it's almost like eventually they get around to it.

If it wasn't for backdating, and I honestly hate to say this, but I probably wouldn't keep the cards. The other ones are better in most every way from support to rewards. But I'm not closing two cards that are backdated to 1999, no matter how much or little I actually end up using them.

And I honestly hate saying it and hate even more it's true, in my opinion.

Hate to say it, but I've pretty much moved away from AmEx. I re-reevaluated my cash back options and here's what I'm doing:

Internet - Chase Ink (5x points/dollar)
Cellphone - Chase Ink (5x points/dollar)
Restaurants - Sapphire Preferred (gonna PC to Sapphire once AF hits) (2x points/dollar, can combine with points from Ink)
Gas - Currently Discover It (5% cash back), once category is over, BofA 321 (or is it 123?) cash rewards (3% cash back on gas)
Online shopping - Discover it via whatever they call their online mall (5% to 20% cash back)
Non-restaurant purchases under $10 - Discover debit card (10c back per purchase)
Auto Pay - car insurance, E-Z Pass, iTunes, etc - Discover it
All other purchases - Discover it

Anyone see any better way?
