Flew JetBlue so no First Class. Each round trip ticket was about 30000 points. Meals, shopping & even gas was on AMEX's dime with points left to spare.

I can claim $7 for 1k points - I am going to aim for the 3,571,428 points that I need but might redeem for something else.

I guess I could see how high I can get my points balance up !

why not just transfer some points and buy yourself a saver award, which should not cost more than 150,000miles at the most

A quick search on Orbitz (which has a handy "first class" option) says they cost about $9200 a pop. Redeeming 3.4 million points for that puts a value of a bit more than $0.005 a pop. That's less than they're worth with pay with points, isn't it?
