New to the "Membership"

Postby RedSoxFan » Thu Jul 04, 2013 1:15 pm

Finally done it and applied and was approved for the AmEx Everyday Cash Credit Card. Initial limit is $5500.00 and super excited however, why is it that I see "read" so many negative comments about the level of customer service that American Express provides?

During my recent interactions, I've had nothing but pleasant things to say about them BUT we've only been members for 3 days.

My question(s) are these:

1. What's the general travel time/mail delivery time from application/approval until delivery of the card (physically in hand) Applied on 07/01 was instantly approved and the standard " your card will arrive in 7-10 business days" of course popped up. Has anyone else received the card within 1 week? What's your experience with the wait time?

2 Also, the primary is my mother and she "added" me on the account and has given me "control" of the account (she's helping me rebuild credit after a Chap. 13) what things can I discuss with customer service?

3. What are my limits to what I can do with the account?
4. Will I have my own card with my own number or will it be the same acct number like with our Discover IT card?

Thanks for your guys help and answering the questions

I've had nothing but fantastic customer service from them, I had an AmEx Zync and upgraded to a Platinum, I frankly love it.

My own personal findings with Amex are if you get an American the CS is great. If you get one of their offshored CS, it's not so great. Just personal experience there. I'm not sure why people sometimes doubt you get what you pay for - if cheap is all that matters, cheap usually isn't as good.
Anyway hopefully you will continue to deal with good CS and not have the experiences with the foreign script readers that others have had.

Whenever I've gotten an Amex card it took 3 business days from approval date to receive it.

I'm confused though - first you say you applied and were instantly approved then you say it's really your mother's card and you are an authorized user? Did I completely misunderstand what you are saying because I'm seeing two different things here. Did your mother actually apply and get the account instantly approved then make you an authorized user? I'm unclear as to what's going on.

As an authorized user you do not have quite the level of control of the primary account holder, of course. You can discuss most things with CS I woiuld imagine though.

If you are an authorized user your mother can set any limit up to the limit of the card she wants for you to have on it. If she sets no hard limit below the credit limit, you have the credit limit available, and you have no restrictions on spending that she doesn't have.

It's the same account number I believe all they change is the security code on the card, an an authorized user yours will be different from hers. That's how they differentiate them.

This information is from past experience I had allowing an authorized user on my account.

A word of advice, it's free and worth what you pay for it so take it or leave it, but be VERY careful that you do not spend more on this card consistently than your mother does. I've read on various sites that having an Authorized User spending more than the primary account holder is one of the possible triggers of financial review by American Express. I'm not going to sit here and detail what financial review is and what it entails you can get that by doing a "Google" search and I need to go to work, just be aware of this.

My wife is an AU on my account and I am an AU on her account the card numbers are the same but the last five and we both have different codes. As for the account issue you can simply be added as the account manager and you should have access to most anything you need.

Now MemberSince99 brings up a good point about this AU card doing all the spending I would look into that more to be safe. Also be advised you wont be able to make a payment till you first bill drops just an FYI.

Sorry for the confusion guys and THANKS for the advice

Mother applied and was instantly approved, during the process she called asked for my SS so she could add me onto the account...Sorry for the confusion about that.

Yes, I've went to google and researched the Financial Review as suggested and will def make sure to not throw a red flag up.....

On any discussion forum site people post when they have problems or questions. You can't assume that you can perform valid statistical analyses using forum postings.

It's funny that you mentioned that Member because I'm thinking about upgrading to Platinum to get 25K MR points & keeping my wife at PRG for the 3X points on flight purchases. Ultimately if I'm buying 4 or 5 round trip flights, with a hotel package 2 to 3 times a year and use the PRG to get the points, I may spend more than what I would spend on my Platinum card. Since I currently do the bulk of my spending on my current PRG. If I do upgrade & start spending on flight purchases only on the PRG, you're saying that would arouse a potential FR.

Well my card arrived yesterday. Nice looking card. Forsure going to take Members advice about watching te spending versus the primary card members spending.

I googled the financial review as suggested by member and holy cow. Seems like they can just FR you for now reason. It's odd cause I def spend more on the Discover IT card than the primary BUT always pay it back and haven't had a FR with them. Only thing was once I was traveling and tried to use it at a pharmacy and they declined the ard and I had to call in and ask why. They stated that the unusually high activity alerted the fraud department because we weren't in the home area. I verified I was traveling and all was well and they reactivated it and I was on my way

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
