I did, they drove out to where my dad had a flat and towed his car out to the dealership.

Good experience and I didn't even have to be there.

Like essentially all people who offer roadside assitance services, amex don't actually do it themselves. They contract it out, and the quality of service depends on who holds the contract. (And, if you're somewhere remote, they're just going to be calling out of the phone book.)

I've never used it before but am curious how it works, I just assumed they have a series of contracts around the country and they kind of act like a dispatch service. What I am curious about is how do I contact them about it, do I just call the number on the back of my card or do I need another number to call? Also does it work in private areas like on a long private road that goes to a cabin or is it only public roads?

I've used AMEX Roadside Assistance 3 times in various places throughout the country. Most recently was in La Jolla, California. Didn't have a vehicle, but we had friends in the area who drove us around. Got back to our hotel from the cove, and heard air rushing out of the tire and found a screw. After unsuccessfully unscrewing lug nuts, I called roadside assistance on my platinum card. They dispatched a tire repair service and they were there in 45 minutes to put on the spare.

AMEX will dispatch whatever service can get to you quickest. I've had everything from AAA to "Bob's Tire Service", but every time, AMEX has provided excellent service, letting me know when a service was dispatched, and making sure the service was performed afterward.

Good question, like do you have to charge the service to your card and get a statement credit or are you just good to know without even giving the service people your card?

They cover up to $50 per instance 200 per year and they don't do statement credit it's just pay the difference.

For Platinum members, I dont know for the other cards.

I think I'd pay that if I got a flat on the highway again.

It might seem like a lot, but believe me, having semis roaring by you at less than 5 feet away at 80 MPH while you are totally vulnerable isn't my personal idea of a fun time. And that's not meant to diss the semi drivers - I had the thrill of watching someone driving an SUV go onto the shoulder where I am and come roaring at me and at the last minute get back into the lane as well. I have no idea if it was poor/inattentive driving, or their way of getting a few laughs playing with me, but either way I can't say I much appreciated it. Rather than go through that again, I'd rather just call.
