My experience with no preset limit being declined!

Postby jcruz133 » Fri Jun 28, 2013 3:16 am

Here is what just happened to me today 6/28/2013: Last week on Jun 15th,2013 I received an approval for the Amex Platinum Card. Of-course it sounded too good to be truth so I decided why not take a chance right?

So, the credit card states that it has “a NO PRE-SET LIMIT” which later I found out that was NOT true…Then I called Amex, told them I was going to be traveling to a business meeting with clients and I needed to make sure I was not going to be get decline on any of my travel transactions. The representative from Amex told me that I “may” get declined and if that happens to please call them back…!

*My response to the Amex rep;
“Wait a minute, are you telling me I can get declined even though I have another credit card through Amex and my credit limit is $12,000 dollars...? as proof of been an excellent business client with Amex???”

*The Amex Representative response:
“Yes!!! You can get declined Mr. XYZ and there is no guarantee you will get approved. Just call us back……

* My response / million dollar question to the rep;
“Why in the world I would take a chance to be embarrassed in front of any of my clients on a dinner table at a restaurant and the minute I pull the “amazing platinum Amex” I get a declined in front of them for????? Not only that but, in top of that, I have to PAY $450.00 yearly fee! On the other side of the coin…….Listen to this, I already have another Amex card with a $12,000.00 credit line!, paid in full every month!, and no worries of any embarrassment in front of any of my clients at any restaurant while conducting my business! Why should I use the “amazing platinum Amex” for then????

* The Amex Representative response:
“So what would you want me to do Mr.XYZ? Just call us back WHEN that happens and we take it from there…………

***Conclusion***
It’s up to you if you want to be played like a fool….$450.00 yearly fee, no guarantee if you get a “dinner approval or not”,False advertising; No Pre-Set Spending Limit3 Get the flexibility of a Charge Card - with no pre-set spending limit!!!! …I am cancelling the AMEX Platinum Card by tomorrow and pay my current pending balances off and be done with it!!! Now, with respect to my other AMEX card with a $12,000.00 limit and ZERO annual fees! I’ll keep that one…Is a good card from AMEX Costco, pays you cash back on purchases and NO WORRIES of been declined in front of my clients!!! “Rest in peace AMEX PLATINUM”. I won’t take the chance!!! About YOU???????????

When I went to the AMEX website to write my review here is their response!!!
Welcome, Select a Card to rate and review We're sorry. We are no longer accepting reviews for particular cards. :mad: :mad: :mad:

I've Never had an issue with the card and I have run several large transactions ($2.5k Plus each) and never had an issue. You can simply login and use the will my charge be approved tool to get what the max limit is for your card. I don't see why American Express would like anyone truly have no limit at all and let them charge up to millions of dollars worth of stuff without having some sort of ability to know if they can pay it off. As for the Annual Fee, if you use all of the services on the card, it's worth it. Sounds like the card just isn't what you were looking for. You will find many on this forum that would disagree but to each their own.

Agreed, once you've had a charge card with them for a while, you won't have any issues with the no-preset spending limit. We don't have the spend checker here in the UK but I've never hit the limit and I've spend well over 10000 dollars in a month.

NEVER had an issue. NEVER.

Don't be too harsh on them. The No Preset Spending limit is based on YOUR spending history with Amex. IF you have no history, then there is no way a $10,000 plus charge will go thru. They are not foolish.

BUT if you have history and a spending pattern then what's the worry.

Hey, even the 'mighty' black card gets caught in hiccups as well. I has a situation where my card was declined for buying a $200 shirt LOL. YES right in front of a long line. I simply said "oh ok.... guess this fake clone card doesn't always work... want to cut it up?! LOLOLOL" handed another card and life moves on. Although I would have wanted them to try and cut it with scissors. That would have been fun to watch.

Later called Amex and was told there was no issue with my card. As a matter of fact, Amex said there was no attempt made either. Bottom line, there was an error on the merchant's terminal.

Don't be afraid. It's not about the card or what you put on the table. It's about YOUR personal bravado. If you are confident, simply brush off the error confidently and whip out another card. The real embarassment is only when all of you are washing dishes.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who gets these random declines lol Amex are particularly bad at it in the UK, although it normally works on the second attempt.

Atleast Issuers can't blame the merchant in EMV countries as EMV transactions that decline because of a communication problem give the reason. When I was in Spain recently one of MasterCard credit card transactions was "declined" and on the machine it said in Spanish and English "Issuer did not respond with an authorisation response with the allotted time", when I called up they were apparently having a very short maintenance lol.

Ha! I remember those days...

Likewise, I've never had an issue either. When I first got my Biz Platinum card, the rep advised me to start slow and pay off immediately -- even several times a month for best results. She said start with $500, then $1500, then $5000, and by that time I was getting approved for spending up to $50K+. I also had other revolving accounts with Amex with similar limits as the OP, but I guess they don't really factor that in when it comes to their "no limit" charge cards.

You can play with the "monkey button" to determine if your charge would go through. If you have a mobile phone you can get the app for it and use that to check anywhere.

This is being way overblown. Just periodically check your internal limit with them this way and you shouldn't have an issue. With your history with them I imagine your internal limit is pretty high.

If you want a card where you are guaranteed never to be declined, we normal mortals don't get one as far as I know, if you are insanely wealthy I'm sure it could be arranged though.

Lack of understanding != false advertising.

So where's your experience with getting declined with the Platinum? This is the real false advertising in this thread.

I am younger, 22, and have never had my AMEX declined. My PRG has about one year of use and right out of the gate averaged about $15k a month. Had balances of over $30k before and never declined. I expect to be upgrading to Platinum soon since July will be my 13th month with the PRG.

As far as this thread goes, I'd be confident your meal is approved.
