So I went to pay my cellphone bill with my Gold card....

Postby MemberSince99 » Thu Jun 13, 2013 7:26 pm

and....declined.

I thought what the hell, I'm way under what will my charge be approved says, so I tried again thinking I entered something wrong - same thing. I go back and re-enter everything from scratch - same results.

Ok now I know there is an issue. I log into the Amex site half expecting to see "SUSPENDED" meaning you are under F/R, though hell if I know why. I didn't. So I went to "will my charge be approved" and put in the amount of the phone bill. It was declined, and said to call in to verify my information.

I called in and the guy asked to verify my phone so he wanted to call me back at my number. I let him and verified my billing address and that was that.

Not sure what would have triggered that, but they seem awfully itchy. It would be damn embarrassing to get declined for 5 bucks at Taco Bell I tell you. So in the meantime I went out and used my CSP entered the info hit submit and bam, payment made, no issues.

So Amex lost a swipe, and I'm kind of leery now that I will go for lunch and be made a fool of, for no good reason that I can see. I mean if I was out charging it up and not paying them I could see it, but I haven't - I've used it but paid as soon as the charges posted. So, I'm going to start using my CSP for a while, and see what happens.

I fully understand being careful, don't get me wrong, I understand where they are coming from, I just don't want to be made an ass out of when I go to lunch. So we'll have to see how this goes.

I mean if they wanted to verify my info, why not just do that when I activate? Why potentially make a jackass of me and alienate me from spending on the card? Chase is going to get some more business now. I'm not really angry with them, just don't want to look like a bigger idiot than I am is that asking too much?

Again I do understand they need to be careful, but if I end up looking like a fool too many times, I'll just have to give the swipes to someone else. So, I guess slowly we go...

You sure it wasn't just sort of network/software issue?

No, he said it triggered their security somehow, of course they aren't going to tell me how, as you know. No one does.

So, it is what it is. I just went online and checked my "will my charges be approved", I thought of putting in 5k to see if it's grown but then realized if it's declined, I don't know if it's still blocked, or if it just hasn't grown so I put in the 4k I was approved for when I got the card and it said it would be approved.

I really do understand they have to be careful just don't make an ass out of me when I go to eat. I guess better to decline when I try to charge online.

At least if they decline it when you eat, you have other cards, but I'd doubt that would happen since it was an online transaction they declined. I can understand if it was a fraud thing though. I wouldn't take that personally or like they are eyeballing you.

See, that wouldn't have happened if you still had your Cash+...and you would have gotten 5% back, to boot. What happened to you is the reason I've avoided charge cards.

You don't know that. In fact the very first charge I ever tried on the Cash+ card was declined! I was pretty hacked off about it. But you should never assume that certain lenders would never do that, as you could be WRONG.

I didn't take it that way at all. And I understand caution. Just I'll probably be leery of pulling that one out when I go to lunch for a bit now.

Really? Man what a dumbass I am! :)

Seriously, with my FNBO card, I went to activate it online, the fact I had a previous one seemed to screw it up but it looked like it activated. So I go to get gas and big decline. I was like crap what now. I called up and the rep said you have to activate it first (and I'm sure she was thinking "you moron" at the end of that...) Kind of funny looking back on it.

I know the feeling. Happened to me a few months after charging and paying off thousands. Went to fill up my car with about $40 of gas & got declined. I didn't believe it when the guy told me it was declined so I told him to try again. Called them up and the representative said that they had attempted to call me at work & couldn't reach me. So, I made an appointment for someone to call me at a stated time. No declines ever since.
