Centurion rumors

Postby DoingHomework » Wed Jun 12, 2013 5:40 pm

I've heard some rumors that Amex is revamping the Centurion card significantly and possibly splitting it into two cards. One would be a tier between the current Centurion and Platinum while the other would be much higher end. I have not hear anything more than this so far. Has anyone else heard these rumors?

It seems to make sense and explains a few things we've heard about the black card - that they have not been issuing invites for a couple of years and that the benefits have declined recently as they cut things back. But who knows?

I read something a while back that they were going to make a card above the centurion- a 1% of the 1% haha, supposedly made of some rare metal/alloy. Just a rumor though...

I haven't heard anything about this, but I hope they don't. I hope they just tighten up on how many Centurion cards they want out there. It is THE card. There doesn't need to be anything above it, but they could add some benefits to it, seeing as how it is quite similar to the Platinum. If they make another card above it, then now all of a sudden there's this feeling like whatever the next top card is will just be there temporarily until something else comes out. The Centurion is the original and was born out of rumors, and it should remain the ultimate card to carry.

Wonder how they will lotto the card out to us current holders?

Maybe they'll give all the current Cent holders the option to upgrade within a certain time window, with another IF and a higher annual fee, then abolish the IF and lower the AF on the current centurion program, make it open to apply for (with high income standards and score needed for approval, maybe a $995 AF so above Platinum), then have the new top tier card be the invite only one, with an even higher AF and IF than the current Centurion, but more benefits, like restoring the free upgrades to first class when there's room on any airline, not just getting you loyalty status with a few airlines. I could see that. The prestige of the Centurion, it's main selling point, would go down if it became known there was now a card above it though.

I would pay the AF just for this alone.

If you really want to make something prestigious and valuable you make a limited fixed number of them--like NYC taxi medallions. Also membership is granted on a year-by-year basis provided you continue to meet the established criteria. If you fail to make the cut you won’t receive a renewal invitiation.

Finally you need to make some benefits clearly superior—I’m not talking about SPG Gold for Amex Plat and SPG Plat for Cent members either. I’m talking about special privileges established exclusively for members; stuff available nowhere else.

^Yes, but I think that would be for the invite only one with an even higher fee than the current Centurion if they split it. According to some web sources, the Centurion used to have that.

WANT!

Do you have to have a plat in order to be invited to cent? Or can you go nuts spending on any Amex?

Main Card: Amex Platinum
For gas: Penfed Platinum Cash Rewards
For travel & dining: Chase Sapphire Preferred

Personally, I'd WANT just to have a black Amex. I have no practical use for it whatsoever. I can't even use the benefits of the Platinum, let alone a Centurion. And given I have the BCP for gas and groceries and a CSP for travel, I can't even honestly justify the 50 dollars a year more the PRG would cost.
