websteth wrote:So, I just got hit with my AF for my Zync. $25 isn't much but I figured I would ask. I have a Platinum which is my main card and a couple other AMEX revolvers. I don't really use my my Zync much anymore now that they have killed all of the packs. My question is, is it worth loosing the card on my report or not? This card I used to make a pretty good size purchase when I got my new car and it is reporting as that it had a high balance much higher than my current platinum. Also, it adds another card to my account that says since 2003.

So, do I close it or pay the AF? Thoughts?

Hah I have almost verbatim situation. I have the Zync and a Platinum. The Zync was great at racking up points when they had the packs (I had a couple packs), but those went away on renewal just this past week. I rarely use the Platinum (it's a MB co-brand charge) except to reap the occasional benefits (i.e. if I'm spending money at the MB dealer, or for the $200 reimbursement, lounge entry, FHR, etc). I regularly carry high balances on my Zync ($10k - $15k per statement) and never an issue. I had a FR on my account and they put a $5k hard-limit on the Platinum because I hit $9k in one month on that card  , but didn't touch the Zync. The hard-limit has since been removed, but it surprised me that they Zync was more trusty than the Platinum, never an issue of any no matter how much I charge.

Now, I want to upgrade to PRG to have some kind of rewards structure, but there is no "upgrade" bonus and they are not waiving the AF. Current offers are for new applicants only. Is anybody aware of how I can get the bonus and AF waived for an upgrade? The website doesn't show upgrade options for Zync, so I have to call in and they had nothing for me other than to upgrade to any charge card I want - sans bonus or AF waiving. Any offer codes out there floating around or anything, or anybody have some tactics?

I read rumors that Amex is bringing the Zync card back.

I really don't know why they killed it off. I think if they worked to really push the right packs or reward options it woud do well.

I don't think that they killed it per se (because if they did then everybody's card would have been shut down) but they did more of an overhaul or changing the dynamics of the card.

I guess that's a good way to think about it.

I would actually apply for the Zync if they brought it back especially if it still has a 25 annual fee. 14 years of backdating for 25 bucks a year? How many can I get? And if they make decent packs again, I'd actually use it.

Crazy! Where did you read such news?

I still have mine, but have long made my Blue Sky the primary spending tool.
Currently: American Express Blue Sky, American Express Zync, Chase Freedom Visa, Capital One Newcomers--->converted to Capital One Quicksilver Mastercard NO AF

No. They're not the same thing. Plum is a charge card targeting small businesses that's available now. The Amex Red hasn't been issued to new cardmembers for some time. It looks pretty nice though if you google an image. The moderators here have it as the icon under their names the way we all have Green/Gold/Platinum/Centurion.
