How often can I upgrade my Amex account?

Postby creditquestion » Fri May 31, 2013 3:03 pm

I know Amex won't let you upgrade within the first 13 months of having a new account, but I've had this account for around two years. I just upgraded from Zync to Green, and am wondering if I need to wait a certain amount of time before Amex will let me upgrade again. For the record, I would be upgrading to a Platinum if I did upgrade again.

I'm not sure what the law is as far as the CARD act, and doing that. You could call and tell them what you'd like to do. I'm sure if they feel it's legal they'll be glad to upgrade you assuming you qualify (and you should, having the Green already).

I believe the CARD Act only applies to cards in the first year for upgrading. It's always worth a call to ask. Sometimes they will offer you a good deal of MR points to upgrade. I got something like 50,000 when I went from Gold to Platinum.

50,000 points to upgrade from Gold to Platinum. That sounds very appealing.

I just went on the site, and looked at that, it says you can upgrade but of course I'd have to wait 13 months I was just curious. But looking over the cards, it listed my Gold card, AND a BCP like I still have one. I looked at apply and I can't apply for one apparently it thinks I have one still open.

Just more evidence that no system is set up to handle how I do things I guess. I'm sure I could "blind app" for it, and that's what I'll do in 6 months. But that makes me wonder if it wouldn't kick that out thinking I already have one I don't need two....good thing I'm not going to do it now I guess....

After 13 months you can upgrade at any time, but if I were you I'd wait for a bonus promo with at least 25k points, they email those quite often.
Amex: Business Platinum (09/12) BCP $10,500 (03/13)
Visa: Capital One Journey $750 (04/11) Chase Freedom $1,800 (04/12)
MasterCard Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select $8,500 (05/13)
Discover: Discover It $2500 (07/11)
Store Cards: Amazon $3900 (12/11) Macy's $500 (04/11) Kohl's $500 (05/12) Victoria's Secret $750 (11/12)

I'd love to get the Centurion too but just can't justify it for my needs right now. Besides I think my invite got lost in the mail :D .
