Some businesses don't have the Amex logo

Postby MemberSince99 » Fri May 31, 2013 12:16 pm

I've noticed a number of busineses lately that don't have an Amex logo on the door (though they do have Visa/Mastercard/Discover) so I tend to prefer places that also accept Amex as three of my cards are Amex cards. I went to one today with no logo, but I pulled out my Gold expecting to hear we don't accept American Express, but it was just swiped and processed. I take it they are doing that to try to discourage people from using their Amex cards, maybe because of higher swipe fees?

I believe that is exactly the reason for not showing a LOGO.

But I believe this also may violate some agreement with Amex and the merchant.

Now you have me thinking I should always just present my card and wait for them to tell me they don't accept it.

I've presented an Amex at places with no Amex decal with mixed results.

You guys are reading WAY to much into window logos. Back when card acceptance was not as common as it is now the window logos meant something. These days they do not mean anything!

I've said before, I have a business that accepts credit cards. I do not show any logos. If I wanted to I could and they would not charge me more. My reason for not displaying them is simple - nearly every business accepts cards these days so there is no reason to have to make that known to customers and no competitive advantage to accepting cards. There might be a disadvantage to not accepting them but since people assume it, there is no need to display them.

If I want to pay with an amex and they don't take it, they lose my business. I don't pay attention to the window sticker.

I ask before I take my card out if they accept Amex. One time, there was no Amex logo on the door, but I asked anyways and he said, "of course we take Amex!" Guess it doesn't hurt to ask.

I have noticed the opposite in New York. Lot so places only display the Amex logo but I see people pay with other cards.

In the UK, this is very common on websites. Websites will not display the Amex logo but when you type in the number it will go through just fine. A good indication of this that the security code field will allow you to type in 4 digits (It will also normally say enter in 3 or 4 digit code).

One of the local computer retailers I've patronized for years once told me after I pulled out my Amex card that "Normally we don't take Amex even though we're set up to do so...their fees are higher. But since you're a long time customer, we'll do it anyway".
Cards:
American Express Platinum (NPSL)
Penfed Platinum Reward Visa ($28K)
Chase Freedom Visa ($25K)
Fidelity American Express ($20K)
American Express Blue Cash Preferred ($20K)
Bank of America Cash Rewards MasterCard ($20K)
Citi Thank You Preferred Visa ($9.5K)
Chase Sapphire Preferred ($7.5K)
US Bank Cash + Visa Signature ($7K)
Discover IT ($4K)

I have run into the same thing so I don't doubt what you are saying.

But as a merchant, I pay a higher fee on a visa signature card than on an AMEX card. It is probably different for for others but basically I think that AMEX fees being higher is a little bit of a myth these days. They used to be higher but I don't think they are always higher anymore.
