hmm...got denied for PRG but approved for delta

Postby panjiaye123 » Tue May 21, 2013 2:52 pm

Went on an app spree today! Instant approval of Delta Gold after instant denial of PRG (and Chase freedom)! lol

I have always been thinking charge cards are easier to get than credit cards for Amex. Well, it proved wrong on me.

I submitted a recon on that PRG afterwards thinking Amex might give me another shot after they see that automated approval. Takes another HP but guess what, I already have 10 on EX last 6 months lol. I will probably be done for a while so it doesn't matter much to me.

I'm not going to lie - recon with Amex is difficult. But you have nothing to lose but a pull. Since you are already a member if they don't approve, that shouldn't be (hopefully) another hard.

For sure recon with Chase too, they are relatively easier to recon with.

That is interesting as the conventional wisdom is the charge cards are easier to get. People will tell you that after you are denied for an Amex, you can't apply again for 30 days, but you proved that is not true. I believe the truth is you can't apply for the same TYPE of card for 30 days, so you would not be able to apply for another charge for a month now.

Honestly, from what I hear and in my own experience with trying to recon with Amex, unless you show that they have inaccurate information (and in this case, they pull EX) they are very unlikely to overturn their decision. I think you tried also to do it from 2 browsers, but sometimes it catches you, and approves one and denies the other since their database won't allow more then one app per month. At least that is my experience when submitting Amex apps. I agree with 99, Chase is much easier to recon, and if worse comes to worse, you can always try again every 3-6 months.

Actually Snowman, they will allow more than one app a month. I got approved for Zync in 4/2012 then early May I got approved for Gold. Same type of card, less than a month apart (if I remember dates, Zync was 4/21 and Gold was 5/5). The key is you have to get approved so had I been declined for the Zync I believe they would not have allowed the Gold that soon.

I know, picky picky, but that's what I found.

I know. I keep applying for the BCE, and I've been denied twice already. I should have applied for the Delta Gold in November as well and then I could have changed it over to the BCE...lol, but I was afraid of being declined. And yeah..more waiting I guess. I am potentially thinking about applying for one more card, but I don't want anyone that will pull EX since I already have 4 inquiries on there already. But yeah, picky, picky alright.

You may have been denied for the PRG because of the app spree hard pulls recent in quick succession AND because they already just gave you a brand new account, especially if that was your first account (the Delta) with them. They may want to see how you do with the Delta before approving you for a PRG as well.

What reasons did they give for the denial? The usual litany of too many new accounts/inquiries/etc? You have the PRG building history with them and nice scores and nice cards, all prime. I would think it's only a matter of time before you get it.

I do think you are wise to wait though. The BCE is worth it, though let's be totally honest, your BofA card gives about the same rewards in terms of cash back. Would you spend enough to justify the BCP?

He actually got denied the Delta and has the PRG. But, your reasoning may be entirely correct as to what happened.

BK- I don't know if you are referring to me or OP? I have the PRG, but I have never apped for the Delta Gold, I have for the BCE, however, and unfortunately no such luck in getting approved.

99-these were the reasons that were listed: Length of time accounts have been established, Length of revolving account history, Too many inquires in the last 12 months, Lack or recent information on installment accounts, and lastly, The length of time you have been a customer with American Express is to short. They said on April 17, 2013 (I assume they are softing me) they said my score was 721. But when I got my freedom, my score came to 736 (at least according to the letter Chase sent me with my Freedom card), but Amex didn't believe me, and they just did not approve me, and asked me to contact EX, and then Fax them a copy...no..I'd rather wait a little while and then app for it again. Oh Well, can't win them all. Thank you for the compliment, I have done my best to keep my credit as clean and spotless as possible over the last year or so. And yeah, I hope to get it hopefully soon. That really is the only card I want from at this point. In a couple of years, if my income rises, I want to try for the SPG.

The BOFA does in fact give the same rewards, BUT, I don't want to waste a HP to get a CLI on a 700$ card. I'd rather hope to get a new card+ Higher initial CL (especially since Chase gave me a good CL for my income.) To be quite honest, I don't think I would spend enough to justify the BCP. At this point I really prefer to have no annual fee cards, the main reason why I want the BCE is because it will be my backup gas card since, I will continue using my BOFA card for most of the month and then the BCE towards the end of the month. I don't grocery shop that much, and that is really where the BCP shines. I might close my PRG as well since I don't travel all to much and I'd rather not pay the annual fee, I only got it since the first year was free and I wanted to build a history with them first (and then eventually try for the BCE and get it.)

-Snowman Amex gave me lots of reasons for the denial too. They probably just want your score to be a little higher since BCE is one of the best no annual fee cash back cards on the market. I tried recon with chase, no luck today..hmm. I will go ahead and try another recon tomorrow. Hopefully they can change their ideas.
