Amex is a known EX puller. If you are borderline for approval they are known to pull others as well but pretty much always EX (it's always been EX for me and just about every other person I've seen).
It's also known their charge cards like the Gold are easier to get than the revolvers (like BCE).
It just depends. For you it sounds like BCE would be more useful to you. However if you went for Gold which you are more likely to be approved for, there are benefits to that as well. The first year will have no annual fee. You will get backdating for when you do get your BCE so that it will be dated to when you opened your Gold (assuming that's your first card). That will give you a nice bump in your score. Also, once you are a member, if you are declined when you apply for the BCE, it will only be a soft pull not a hard. The only bruise will be to your ego if you are declined.
So, it makes sense to go for the Gold based on what you've told me. You can always cancel it after a year when the fee comes due if you find it's not useful to you, assuming you get the BCE by then. Based on that and your score, I'd apply for the Gold.
Give that 6 months to just under a year to build a relationship with Amex, then go for the BCE.
Some may say you can apply for both the same day hoping they use the same pull for both cards. No guarantees, and I don't recommend that as a rule because going for too much at once MAY spook them. It's always YMMV and if you want to play it safe, best to not try gimmicks like that.
I hope this helps you and good luck if you go for it please let us know what happens.
