Got Platinum!

Postby gold-rick » Thu May 09, 2013 7:12 pm

Pretty stoked! being 20, I thought they would't approve me. This is pretty cool

With the platinum, do you get double points for booking through Amex travel, hotel and flights?

Thanks everyone, I am pretty happy!

I was very surprised to get approved, I only make around 40-45 k a year, compared to some members with the Platinum making in the $90-100k range. I'm only 20, so hopefully I'll be in the range one day!

I do travel quite a bit, so this card will definitely be handy. Going to England later in the year, so hopefully I can rack up some points!

Another question guys -

Does anyone know if BWI Airport in Baltimore has any lounges my Plat can get me in?

Not to burst your bubble, but, the PRG card actually racks up points faster than the plat. The fact you get 3x points on airfare and 2x points on gas & groceries, well, doesn't make the plat 1x point on all purchases sound that great. Does the PRG give lounge access? No, but as a frequent traveler myself, I never really found the need for a lounge. Are they nice? Sure, but, the long-haul international flights usually board upwards of 1 hour before take off, so not much time is really available to be in a lounge. I sure as heck wouldn't go to the airport early just to be in a lounge. But that's just me. Why did I cancel my PRG in favour of the BCE? The MR programme seems to be getting watered down more and more each year. Granted, in one year I had made enough points to fly round-trip Washington DC to the Netherlands, but the flight required a 23 hour layover in London AND returned 2 days earlier than I wanted to. There are so many restrictions on reward flights that it's not worth the hassle. Give me the simple, straight up cash back any day with no annual fee!

I may be wrong, but I believe you need to be 21+ to get into (most) lounges (unless you have an adult with you) due to alcohol being served.

+1 A lot of lounges have unattended bars, you may have to check with each airline to find out the individual policy.

I thoroughly enjoy my Platinum for the travel benefits. Lounge access and airline credit easily cove my AF every year. All the other perks are gravy.

Download the Amex app if you have an iOS device, it has an airport guide with a lounge finder. I think there is an Android version as well.

Do yourself a favor and study all the benefits that come with your card. The first few years I missed out on a lot and didn’t get my $$ worth. Asking questions here is good but things change often so you may not get the most up-to-date info here. At your salary many of the perks will be out of your range, but you can always make your AF back by being creative.

Congrats and welcome to the club!
