I'm officially an AMEX card holder! Any thoughts or advice?

Postby Okie21 » Wed May 08, 2013 5:11 pm

Yesterday I applied again for the BCE, after getting insta-denied last summer with an EQ FICO of 747. This is my first AMEX card ever, so I wanted to ask the "pros" on here for any advice or info that I should know about being a cardholder with AMEX in general, and if there are any tips and tricks to use specifically for the Blue Cash Everyday card.

Do you have to sign up for the 3% cashback at grocery stores and the 2% back at gas stations? How are they about CLI's? Also, where can I find the list of accepted vendors for their higher cashback categories? And lastly, can I find out what my approved CL is online or do I have to wait til I get my card in the mail?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks in advance for any info!

Best advise for you is to use it.... use it lots and don't let it lapse. It's the best card to have in your wallet. IMO.

My advice to you: Spend lightly on it, since this is your first card with them. Don't do anything that will get you on their radar, you want to be off the radar, because you never know if they might conduct an FR. Other then that, Amex IMO, is the best company (other then Chase and Discover) to be a card-holder with and you should be proud to have an Amex, be good to them and they will be good to you.

There's nothing further to sign up for. Just start using it and gain the rewards. And I think that a "grocery store" is a standalone store, not a WalMart or Super Target.

As for CLIs, the biggest and best one is just 61 days away. Read it and reap.

Thanks for the input you guys. I called AMEX today and after a little nudging the CSR finally told me my credit limit. I got approved for $5k. Up until a few months ago the only card I'd ever had (a store card) was just a $500 CL, then I asked for a CLI and they bumped it to $5k w/o me even asking to go that high. I guess that CLI help me get approved for $5k on this card. Not too shabby for my second credit card ever, haha. I'm really pleasantly surprised!

That's a good start. $5k is a decent limit.
