Didn't get approved for Gold Card (UK)

Postby vettel1 » Wed May 08, 2013 9:19 am

New to the forum but I've been lurking for a few weeks now (excellent stuff here).

I applied for the Preferred Rewards Gold Card on Friday and got the 7 - 10 days review screen. I just received a letter today from Amex saying:

"Thank you for applying for the American Express Gold Card.

I regret to advise you that after careful consideration I am unable to approve your application.

However, I would be pleased to give consideration to issuing you with a Supplementary Card to an existing American Express Card account should a member of your family already hold a Card. If you should wish to take us up on this offer, please call out Telephone Service Centre on the above (generic
) number."

I currently have two credit cards which are paid off in full every month and my Experian credit score is 971 if that means anything. I have a student overdraft with HSBC of £750 but I only ever go £30 - £40 into it at the most as the overdraft was part of the student account package.

I was interested in the PRG for the rewards and protection it offered. I like the idea of charge cards as well since I like paying my cards off in full every month!

They haven't checked my credit report as no searches have came up from them. Is it worth giving them a call? Should I work my way up and go in for the Basic Card?

Interesting that the letter you got from Amex felt so personal written, using "I" instead of "we..."

With an EX score of 971, I'm flabbergasted that you were denied... That's almost the equivalent of having an 840 here in the States!

I would definitely give them a call and ask for their reasoning behind your denial, and perhaps ask if they might consider you for the Green card, if they really won't budge on the Gold.

PS - in other news, I take it you're a Sebastian Vettel fan?

Yeah, seems odd that he kept it so personal. The man was a "Manager, New Accounts" but I assume most of the decline letters will be from them.

I hadn't checked by Experian Credit Report since November when it was around 850 so I signed up for the month to see if there were any problems but I can't see any negatives with it.

I'll give them a call tomorrow then asking about it. Should I phone the new accounts number or is there a better department to call?

(I can't see an edit button for my previous post.)

I am indeed a Vettel fan! I was trying to think of a username when I glanced to the side of my monitor and seen my signed photo of him!

First thing,

Don't pay any attention to UK credit scores given, they mean nothing. Its not like in the US.

Secondly, If you ask them about it, they'll just say you didn't meet their credit criteria.

I would have a look at your credit report though, the charge cards are pretty easy to get.

I just got off the phone with Amex. The woman I was speaking to told me it was mainly because I said I was a student and their internal markings would spot this. She did say I could write to the executive office in Brighton and appeal but I don't plan on doing this.

I generally don't think much of my credit score but I use Experian to view my credit report as much as possible now. As I said, my credit report seems fine. The only negative factor is I got my Halifax Clarity Card 4 months ago which I guess isn't that long ago.

Also, she said the whole "I" instead of "we" thing is standard on the careful consideration letters.

I'm a little confused -- are you still living in the UK, or are you already living in (or planning to live in) the US? I ask because I'm wondering which of your EX credit scores are pertinent.

Secondly, that's awesome about Vettel! Mark Weber? Good riddance. And at age 25, he already has Schumie handily beat!

I have no plans to live in the US and I'm not sure where I mentioned that. Sorry for the confusion! I'm still living in the UK. It was the UK PRG I applied for.

I met both Vettel and Webber down at Red Bull Racing's HQ when I had an interview. Nice guys! But yeah, step aside Webber.

Any other UK students out there who have managed to nab a Amex Gold Card?

Sorry, I didn't realise you were a student. Amex seems to only be interested in people who work full-time or who are homemakers at the moment. Stupid really as they would be far better off getting younger people, keeping them for many years.
