Cash advance

Postby FastSRT8 » Fri May 03, 2013 11:34 am

Does anyone know if all Amex products offer cash advance?

The reason I am asking is because during my travels to Asia, I wanted to withdraw some cash from a bank machine only to realize in Japan for example, PLUS and INTERACT don't exist! Well that pretty much percludes using most of your North American bank issued cards.

These machines in Japan however will take Amex, Visa, etc.

I don't recall ever getting a PIN# for my card..... wondering if that means my card doesn't support cash advance.

For cash access Amex charge cards work like debit cards tied to your chequing account, so when you take cash out of the machine your chequing account would be debited.

You can call Amex and get a PIN.

Maybe take it back to Amex's original roots? Traveler's checks?

With they did that here in the UK, its just a standard cash advance and you have to pay 3% on top.

They don't like cash advances or cash like purchases.

One thing that really made laugh was when I was buying some foreign currency from the American Express website and they didn't take American Express cards for about 3 months lol!

That's really crappy that PLUS and INTERACT don't work, meaning you can't use your standard debit cards to withdraw from ATM's and avoid the massive fees that credit cards impose when using cash advances...

How can they take Visa and not plus? I'm pretty sure its impossible to have an ATM that takes Visa but not Plus since they own Plus.

That's how credit cards, including those from Amex, work but Amex's charge cards don't have a 'cash advance' feature.

Trust me... they dont.

Don't make the same mistake and head to Japan thinking they will.

It's ridiculous...... guess Interact and Plus are North American only.

Not just North American, I have a Visa credit card and debit card that have the PLUS network logo on the back as well and they are issued by UK banks. I've also used ATMs that have the PLUS logo on in Thailand.
