Using US credit cards in Italy?

Postby rockyrock » Tue Apr 23, 2013 6:54 am

Anyone traveled to Rome, Italy lately and used their credit card for daily purchases--shops, cafes, transportation, etc. I know the larger hotels and tourist hotspots are probably okay but I'm more concerned with small businesses and such accepting them.

Thanks!

I'm wondering if your platinum card (assuming you've requested the chip & signature version) will work as advertised in EMV-heavy Italy...

I had no problems in Spain, except for a few small places that had minimum purchase requirements. My parents were in Italy last October and they don't have any EMV cards. No problems for them.

Most places will take the card the old fashioned swipe way.

I have yet come to a spot that won't swipe a card to charge an expense. I've run into more situations where they don't accept the brand of card rather than the method of 'swiping' it

Thanks for the responses.

I should have been more specific, I was wondering about Amex cards. Most any place that accepts credit will take Visa but I prefer to use my Amex.

Z06Biker: My card is old school. I'll request the new one once I get home from this deployment.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I have ordered Chip & PIN/Signature versions of my Amex Platinum and USAA World MC.

My plan now is:
1) CSP (swipe only)
2) Amex Platinum (C&P)
3) World MC (C&P)

Your Amex will come chip and signature. They do not offer a chip and pin.

Yeah just I wouldn't plan on using your Amex in Italy a huge amount. Most places won't take it. Visa or MasterCard only most of the time.

I have recently come back from Rome, Italy and have the chip and sig amex platinum card. No places I shopped used the chip and sig they swiped it like a regular card. No issues. many places off via orlando and via nationalize including locations around the trevi fountain are swiped as a merchant would in the U.S.
