BCP forex fee

Postby bekimtl » Mon Apr 22, 2013 5:25 pm

I am fairly new to AMEX Blue cash everyday rewards. Has anyone ever have a problem with amex charging a foreign transaction fee on purchases made on Ebay through Paypal? The item was purchased from a seller in China.

I was charged and it is ridiculous. My other cards (Discover, Chase, Mastercard) has never done this to me.

Does this sound right, anyone? Please let me know. I am still trying to justify this.

I've bought items in ebay before from sellers in china, but they usually take payments in the form of USD rather than in their form of currency. Did you check their listing to make sure the amount they were selling that item was in the form of USD? Next time stick with Discover since they don't charge FTF.

yep, sounds right to me. it says they charge a 2.7% foreign transaction fee in the card agreement. discover is known for the fact that they never charge an exchange fee, and never have in the past. so for those purchases stick to discover, as previously mentioned.
Junk I use:
AmEx Platinum for Mercedes Benz from, 75k spending ability
AmEx Everyday 8.99% + Prime, 44k CL
Chase Ink Bold, 35k
Chase Freedom (Converted from WaMu VISA) from '07, 5.99% + Prime, 30k CL

Junk I don't use
BoA Susan G. Komen Cash Rewards (converted from World Points MC) from '07, 7.9% Fixed APR, 30k CL
Discover IT (Converted from Discover More) from '08, 5.74% + Prime, 20k CL
AmEx Clear from '07, 4.99% + Prime, 10k CL
All 3 credit scores are over 800.

Apart from Discover it is likely you were charged but they just didn't show the charge and just hid it in the transaction.
Amex UK Platinum Charge Card
Amex Blue Cash USA
Amex US Gold Corporate Card
World MasterCard Capital One UK (Free abroad + Cashback + Free Cash Withdrawals with no interest)

Ye of little faith. Discover doesn't charge a forex fee, period. They don't sneak it into the transaction. There would be a giant class-action lawsuit if they did.

To the OP - if the transaction goes through Paypal, it's charged by Paypal, which is an American company doing business in American dollars. If Paypal charges to convert currencies, it charges the seller, not the buyer.
