AMEX Product Change Rules

Postby j89808 » Fri Apr 19, 2013 9:54 am

What is the earliest that you can PC an AMEX (specifically a business card). I want to change it to a no Annual Fee card soon, and was thinking the "SimplyCash" or the Costco. Any thoughts?

I changed my gold delta skymiles amex to the SPG amex the VERY DAY I was approved and realized the delta card, well, sucked (for my purposes, at least). We all already know you can't switch from revolver to charge, or vise-versa. Whether you can switch within the same categories across personal and business cards, however, remains at large.

I was able to change my personal Delta Gold to a Blue card less than one year after obtaining it. I was actually shocked I was able to do it so early because I thought I would have to wait the full year. I have a Business Gold Rewards charge and also a Business Simply Cash as well, and I'm thinking I may cancel the BGR before the annual fee hits, or maybe downgrade it to a Green Business charge. Not sure I can justify the annual fee since I have the no fee SC card.

The Costco card doesn't have an annual fee with Amex, but you have to pay the Costco annual membership fee with Costco. You also have to take into consideration whether it would benefit you. Do you shop at Costco a lot? Otherwise, go with something that will reward you in other ways.

well I am wondering since I have the Platinum Delta card, and have already been charged the 150 AF. I wanna PC to either SimplyCash or Costco (I have a costco card), but am not sure if I am supposed to wait 3 months or what?

I applied for the PRG with the 25k MR points offer and the Delta SkyMiles Gold with the 30k SkyMiles offer in September 2012. When you have the DL AMEX, Delta allows you to Pay With Points, and your first checked bag is free on any delta flight automatically. In November, I requested a Product Change and was able to change the gold skymiles card to the Blue Cash Everyday. The rule is that you can always downgrade to a card with a smaller or no annual fee essentially at any point, but you have to wait 1 yr to upgrade to a higher annual fee, such as if i wanted to upgrade my PRG to Platinum. BEST PART: Delta still thinks I have the SkyMiles card, so hello free bags and NO annual fee ;)

Interesting. I didn't know about this downgrade-anytime/upgrade-only-after-12-months rule. Makes sense though; Chase is the same with their Sapphire card...

I do believe so. I've heard it was done before, and when I called to switch my Delta Gold, they said my options were the SPG, BCE/BCP and the Hilton Honors Amex, I believe...
