Does being an authorized user help your credit score?

Postby HookEmHorns » Mon Apr 15, 2013 2:14 pm

How much would being an authorized user on an AMEX (specifically, a BC Preferred) help my score, if at all?

My mom treats it like a charge card, not carrying a balance. The only thing that has me concerned is that she charges everything to the card every month, so her utilization on the card is around 95% each month, and this is what's reported to the bureau until she pays it off.

So, would it hurt or help my credit score? I would only do it if I could get some significant credit boosts with it.

FYI, I have a Discover IT College with a limit of $1,300 now.

I'm not sure being an authorized user helps at all, as it's not as though you're actually responsible for the account. You just have a card linked to that account with your name on it. It's a bit like having a key to someone else's house. Just because you can enter doesn't make the house yours.
Scores on the mend...
FICO: 654 (7/2017, AMEX), Vantage: 663 (CK)
Cards I Use Amex Premier Rewards Gold, Discover IT, Capital One QuickSilver MC, Amex Gold Delta (for the free bag)
Sock Drawer Chase Amazon, AE Visa, CareCredit, several store cards for util padding
Next Card Amex Everyday

This is true. You need your own stand alone account.
