Does Walmart take American Express?

Postby mylav » Thu Mar 28, 2013 3:58 pm

Can you use American Express at Walmart? How about their gas stations, Murphy's. Can you use them there too?

*sorry I meant to ask this in my other post but forgot and it won't let me go back and edit it.

Small ma & pop shops and fast food is mostly the places that don't take Amex. All your big box stores, major retailers, gas stations and formal dining usually take Amex.

Yes, smaller stores don't because of their high acceptance fees.
My Cards

Chase Freedom Visa Signature: $5.2K
Capital One Quicksilver Visa: $7.5K
Discover IT: $5.5K
Huntington Voice World Mastercard: $1.6K

In the garden indefinitely.

Which is totally bogus to me. I take AmEx on my ipad/iphone with Square. No way I'd lose a sale simply because of a processing fee. Price appropriately and it's no problem at all.
AmEx - Platinum, Gold, Bluebird
Chase - CSP, Freedom
HSBC - Orchard Bank (1999)

I really don't see the difference in terms of percentage for the merchant. I have to say that eventually Visa, MasterCard, and Discover will raise up their percentage up to that level eventually. There are already starting with PayPal.
Wells Fargo Platinum 2.100 (5/2011-cld 7/12/14)
AmEx Platinum (6/12)
Barclays Apple (6/12)
AMEX Gold Delta (5/13)
Marriott Rewards (7/14)

My credit score
EQ: unknown
EX: 762
TU: 752

It is not YOU who is accepting AmEx as payment, it is Square doing so on your behalf. Same way Paypal accepts AmEx on behalf of all the Ebay sellers. they take care of all the things AmEx demands from merchants so you don't have to. If there is a problem AmEx doesn't call you, they call Square, then Square contacts you.

I work as a technology consultant. I take care of my clients' entire computer networks, including servers, workstations, everything. One of my clients is a small chain of privately owned stores. Visa/MC/Discover don't have any special requirements and their acceptance fees were much lower than AmEx. AmEx on the other hand not only forces down higher fees, they also makes me fill out these bogus quarterly "surveys" about my network's security to make sure their client's CC data is secured.
Junk I use:
AmEx Platinum for Mercedes Benz from, 75k spending ability
AmEx Everyday 8.99% + Prime, 44k CL
Chase Ink Bold, 35k
Chase Freedom (Converted from WaMu VISA) from '07, 5.99% + Prime, 30k CL

Junk I don't use
BoA Susan G. Komen Cash Rewards (converted from World Points MC) from '07, 7.9% Fixed APR, 30k CL
Discover IT (Converted from Discover More) from '08, 5.74% + Prime, 20k CL
AmEx Clear from '07, 4.99% + Prime, 10k CL
All 3 credit scores are over 800.

One thing that is good for a merchant with Amex is the fee is always the same. Not like Visa or MC where you don't actually have a clue what you'll be charged because of things like MC World, World Elite, Visa sig etc.
Amex UK Platinum Charge Card
Amex Blue Cash USA
Amex US Gold Corporate Card
World MasterCard Capital One UK (Free abroad + Cashback + Free Cash Withdrawals with no interest)
