Going to give Platinum a go...

Postby Robrus1 » Mon Mar 25, 2013 3:57 pm

I called last night and upgraded to Platinum. I called I wanted to make sure I'd get the EMV chip in my card since I'll be going across the pond in a couple months. Something I didn't know was possible: I really wasn't too happy about paying $175 extra for my AU, so I asked if she could keep her Gold card. I was told that she could be an AU on my account with a Gold card for $45 per year (a regular gold instead of a PRG, unfortunately), but it will also have an EMV chip.

That'll be a big upgrade. I hope you enjoy some of the new perks.

Most interesting, however, is that this is the first I've seen of a regular Gold Card available with an EMV. Do they waive the Forex fee for the Gold because the card is an AU on a Platinum account?

I meant to ask the CSR whether or not her card will have foreign transaction fees but I forgot. I plan on calling to ask as soon as I get our cards. Yeah, they said that it would have the EMV chip, but after reading what some of you have gone through, I guess we'll see. They said I'd have the new cards in 7-10 business days. They overnighted my PRG when I signed up for it, and I expected the same with the Platinum. Perhaps it takes longer to get the chipped cards.

I have a couple of questions, however. My first question is about the $200 airline credit for food/drinks/baggage fees, etc. I know you have to enroll for a particular airline once a year, but do you have to book the flight through the Amex website, or does paying with my Platinum Card through say, Priceline, work? I have the same question about using the airport lounges. Would paying with the Platinum and flying the airline be ok, or do I have to book it through Amex travel?

Well, at some point I would expect EMV to come to other Amex products with Gold being the most obvious choice next. It's entirely possible they are getting ready to roll it out but I haven't heard of anyone actually seeing it yet.

As for the $200 credit with airlines, yes you have to sign up with a particular airline, but no, the ticket does not have to be booked through Amex.

When the cards arrive I will report back and let you all know whether or not the Gold Card actually came with the chip.
Thanks for answering. Will I still have access to the airport lounge if I am flying the airline I enrolled with and payed with my Platinum Card, but booked it through websites other than Amex? Sometimes I can't find what I need booking through Amex.

Access to the airport lounges that are available through the Platinum card are not tied to what you chose for the $200 credit. So if you fly with American one day and show the card at the Admirals Club, and then fly Delta the next day and show the card at the Sky Club, you should be fine in both cases.

But is access to clubs limited within the U.S. if you're a U.S. cardholder??

I don't think it's limited to just the U.S., because last night I was looking at booking a trip through the Amex website and it said I had complimentary access to an American Airlines lounge at Heathrow.

Additionally, you get the Priority Pass Select which opens up a great many lounges internationally:
