The agents probably didn't know what they were talking about, but AmEx will not issue EMV's initially.
This is what I was told when I called a few minutes ago. I was told that they will always send a non-EMV card initially. I was told I have to wait 10 days from the activation of my Platinum Card until they can issue me a new card with the EMV chip, so I have to call them back on the 4th. I told them that I am going overseas in a couple of months and they said it would be no problem for them to send me one.
I did learn that my AU's Gold Card will not be subjected to foreign transaction fees since it is tied to my Platinum account, which I was glad to hear. I was also told that there is not currently a way for her to receive a chipped Gold card, but eventually there will be according to the Platinum reps, which is not what I was initially told, but still suspected to be true.
