Maximizing Amex Platinum $200 airline fee credit & lounges

Postby jlam572 » Thu Mar 21, 2013 5:58 am

I routinely fly Hawaiian because I live on Oahu and am constantly flying out of Honolulu. I use my amex points to transfer to hawaiian miles because I fly interisland a lot (4-5 times a month). My questions are ... with the amex platinum...

1) The $200 airline fee waiver. Can this be used for airport lounges that arent part of the "airport access" program?
2) The international ticket program, will amex let you use miles from the airline you want to book from through amex travel or does it have to be amex points?

Here's the detail from Amex:

"baggage fees, flight-change fees, in-flight food and beverage purchases, airport lounge day-passes, pet-kennel fees, and phone reservation fees"

The problem is that you have to choose one airline for this and the selection lasts a year. Here's the list of airlines that qualify:

AirTran (merging with Southwest)
Alaska Airlines
American Airlines
Delta Airlines
Frontier
Hawaiian Airlines
JetBlue
Spirit Airlines
Southwest Airlines
United Airlines
US Airways

So it looks like that will work for you. More details here on this blog post: http://travelsort.com/blog/maximizing-the-amex-platinum-airline-fee-credit

As for the international ticket program, I would seriously doubt they'd allow you to use airline miles for that. It's cash or MR points only and I don't even see the program details mentioning MR points.

Thank you. I have been interested in upgrading my PRG for a while....but I rather wanted a bonus points offer...the 50k points of the amex platinum mercedes charge card looked damn good. Called amex, instant approval, thanks.
